I am going to be driving across Pennsylvania from Philly to Lake Erie and I may need to bring a roof luggage bag with me. I already have a soft luggage bag that is square and has two straps on each side. My 2005 4x4 trac does not have the cross bars but does have the side rails. I was also thinking I may be able to strap the bag on top of the tonneau cover and use the tie down hooks to strap the bag down. I dont plan on putting a lot in the bag but I am worried that not have the front on the bag tied down if its on the roof will enable wind to get under and could rip the bag off. Are the tie down hooks strong enough to handle having a luggage bag strapped to them? What do you guys think is my best option if I have to use the luggage bag?

Thanks

Sean

If you have the factory hard tonneau it should be okay. My old '05 didn't have the roof crossbars either and I put my carrier up there without incident.

The tie down hooks will hold a lot. I use them regularly with ratchet straps that I'm sure I've over tightened

Both will work fine, but I do believe that if strapped to the cover you will save fuel and will not create wind noise that you may hear coming through the roof..

IIRC, the tie down hooks can hold something like 600 LBS per hook. Crank it down and run like hell.

The tie downs on the outside of the bed were good for 700 lbs, if i remember correctly. The small ones on the inside of the bed only good for 150 lbs.
