Has anyone else seen one of these little things in person? I seen some in Amsterdam, and they are now making their way to the states. You can reserve one for $99 at www.smart.com

I am SERIOUSLY considering ordering one of these. I want the cabriolet version in red/black with red/black interior. What do you guys/gals think? Averaging 60mpg <<<< can't beat that! Would be a super nice summer ride for sure, and I bet you won't see many of them.

60 MPG? I read only 40 MPG. I like the cars, but for only 40 MPG, they are not practical one bit. For a little more money, you could get something that would get the same gas mileage, have more power and sit 4 people.

It is possible it is the diesel version that got 60 mpg, I just remember that as the most prominent fact from when I first learned of these over in Amsterdam.

I think you are right about 60 MPG with a Diesel.

I fell in love with the Smart car while in Germany in 2001.

Honestly, 11,000 to 14,000 for a vehicle that is a two seater and NOT a sports car is too expensive. Sure, 40 MPG is still good, but it is only a two seater with no room for storage. If I lived in a conjested city like New York, than it might be a good idea.

For me, and I suspect 99% of those in the USA, the Smart car is not very smart.

My wife and I saw them up close and personal 3 yrs ago in Paris when I proposed to her. We both thought they were really cool and the 1st picture we took when we got to our hotel was with a Smart car. We thought they would be perfect for running errands, going to work and back and other miscellaneous running we do that consumes more fuel. You definitely would not drive one on a long trip for comfort reasons, but for light to light ripping and running around town I think they woud be great.

as far as i know i think all the U.S. ones will be getting the Mitsubishi built 1.0 liter gas motor no diesel here in the states, at least not this model year

I have seen it in person at actually had the chance to sit in it. I am 6'2" and 230 lbs, my dad is 5'9" 300lbs and we both fit in it perfectly. I would get the sports car version that is coming here to the US in about 2 years SMART told me. I have actually tried to get a job with them to no avail for far.

SMART is a great little car for the city dweller, or as a commuter car to the train station.

plus i think it can fit in the bed of the ST

LOL

I see Sm@rt cars almost every day. Here is the basic model and the Sport model in front of the hotel I stayed at in Rome. :)

they are all over the place in canada. but I have seen enough posts of gruesome aftermaths from accidents...

I wont risk my families safety just to save a little gas.

Really? I watched a crash test video of this hitting a wall and it fared nicely. They talk about how good their cage is in cases of accidents. Hmmmm

Bootsy, a wall is sitting still. So if you hit a wall at 40mph, that's one thing, but 2 40mph cars have a head on collision (given one is not a SMART car) and that little thing will end up going backwards. So, 40mph to going in reverse in < 1 sec...I'll keep my gas guzzling SUV.

There are a lot of variables in a collision. It isn't as simple as the physics class experiments with elastic collisions. Vehicle manufacturers design areas to crumple which reduces the deceleration experienced by the occupants. The angle of impact and other factors all play into whether a person is injured/killed..

The thing I would worry about, and which concerns me in my Mazda, is a side impact collision with a larger vehicle. A larger vehicle will hit a car too high for any of the side protection to help the passengers or driver.

I saw one in northern michigan and in western michigan on a small travel vacation last weekend. They do not look safe at all.
