I own an 07 ST V8 4x4 and an 07 Mustang GT V8. Both require the same oil and filter (I think the oil is 5W-20).

This past summer I put Mobil 1 (6 qts. each) and a Motorcraft filter (FL-820S) in each V8.

In the last few months I noticed lifter tap in both V8's. I likely did not notice it in the summer due to the windows up and a/c on.

I just changed the oil again to Castrol Syntec, with the same Motorcraft filter. No lifter tap.

I've been a dedicated Castrol GTX user for 30 years. I only used the Mobil 1 because Syntec was not available at the time.

Anyone else had this same experience?

I have a C5 Corvette and Mobil 1 is all I use and never had any issues however, if the Castrol GTX seems to work better for you then I would stick with it. Both are very good oils and doubt you could go wrong using either one of them. In regards to the lifter tap, I would be curious to know if the noise resurfaces after you have put a couple thousand miles on the Castrol?

I had a tap with Mobil 1, I used Royal Purple and the lifter tap disappeared too. I'm guessing the oil also. Castrol is a good oil.

Mobil 1 is thinner for a given weight than some other oils. Not all oils of the same weight have exactly the same viscosity, there is a range that they fall into.

I occasionally get used oil analysis done on my family's vehicles, on every one that I've tried both on I got a better UOA with Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic than I did Mobil 1 and the Pennzoil is about a buck cheaper a quart. Also Motorcraft Blend showed up nearly as well as Mobil 1.

Last time I took my Mazda 3 in for service, I requested Castrol GTX. The service dept said it was bad oil, and they recommended Mobil 1. They had a Mazda 6 (one year old) which was in for a engine rebuild. They said the owner used GTX. I suspect the owner also abused the vehicle, since I never heard of a blown engine so soon, except for Mud's Titan, and some of the Ford stories on this site.

I noticed the viscosity with the royal purple...

The same weight, the RP is soo much thinner and not as sticky as the other oils...

I hope it protects as well......

Here is my experience with Lifter noise. We blew an engine in our M3 race car. Replaced the top half and had lifter noise for a short time. Always used Mobil 1. In fact, all the fluids get replaced after a race.

After many complaints to the mechanic we switched to another shop and I specially told him to drop the oil pan and check the oil pump. Found out we had a hole on top of the pan and a bad oil pump. Therefore, the lifters weren't getting enough pressure with oil.

We now have a 7 qt pan and I'm going to add an accusump so the engine is always pressured up.

My point is I don't think changing brands could cause that. I can see going from Mobil 1 to another brand though.

My solicitation was really about the Castrol Syntec. This is the first time I've used it. I brought up GTX ("natural oil") because I have a very long, successful history with it. In fact, I have a GM 1984 2.8 L V6 with 220 K miles, and this is in an engine I understand that typically lasted less than 100 K.

Anyway, I'm trying to translate my experience with Castrol GTX (natural) to Castrol Syntec (synthetic).

Still no ticking, in either V8.

JohnnyO, Have you done a UOA on Royal Purple?

No, never tried Royal Purple. Check the UOA Forum at BobIsTheOilGuy.com, maybe someone has a RP UOA from a 4.0 SOHC. Well, I mean use the Search, there's a lot there.

Or go to www.blackstone-labs.com, they will send you a collection bottle for free, you send it back with your used oil in it and a check for $22.50.
