There are many ways to modify a vehicle.

This is advice I got many years ago that I pass-on. This is advice, not an absolute recipe for success.

Avoid a body lift if you can.

First, decide on what you want your vehicle to do well (most of the time).

If you want ground clearance, you'll need taller tires. With taller tires comes the possibility that they won't fit in the wheel wells. If this is the case, you'll need tire clearance. There are different way to create clearance.

If you want a rock crawler, then you'll want lots of soft suspension articulation and this means that you'll increase the amount of travel and that should create the space needed for the tires.

If you want a "desert runner", then you want lots of suspension to absorb hits and this means that you'll increase the amount of travel and that should create the space needed for the tires.

If you want a capable trail rig, you don't need much - just traction (keeping the tires on the ground, and driven). This means articulation (quick disconnect anti-sway bar end links), good tires and some sort of locking differential (s) (depending on how much you think you'll need).

A body lift will not raise the undercarriage. To me, a body lift is only needed when the tires are so large that they won't fit after increasing the suspension (and then I wonder what is the use of the vehicle) or for looks.

Also, avoid rim spacers. They are a cheap way to change backspace. They create leverage on the studs. Get rims with the spacing you want.

And ...

The more capable is your vehicle, the farther out you are when you get stuck.
