Hello All,

We are trying to plan a driving vacation to someplace unique and worth the drive in the Midwest for a group of people driving really old classic cars. Can anyone suggest a place, a dont miss thing, a route? Where have you been that you were really glad you went? Thanks Marsha

p.s. we're thinking a long weekend or maybe a whole week!

Auburn Indiana. Home of the Auburn, Duselldorf and Cord cars. Nice museum there at the old Cord factory. If you hit the right weekend, the Kraus auction might be going on too. Memorial Day and Labor Day are the usual huge auctions, but they do have others scheduled throughout the year. Indy is a couple hours south with all the race car museums there.

Hope this helps a bit.

None of the auto plants in St. Louis area have public tours. There are some very scenic areas in southern Illinois along the Ohio River near Paducha, KY.; most notibly, Garden of the Gods park. Paducha has a wonderful riverfront. Patoka Lake in Indiana, between Evansville and Louisville, is very nice. Not crowded, crystal clear water and reasonably priced boats for rent. Do a web search on these and find out more. These are all places that we plan to revisit in the coming years.

If you have never been to the Black Hills, it would be a good trip. Rapid City area is nice and lots to see. Spearfish Canyon would be a must if you get to the Rapid City area. Rod

I would recomend driving up the eastern border of MN. Though Winona, Lake City and up to Red Wing. All of these towns are kinda in a time warp, and the classic cars would go over like gangbusters. It is beautiful countryside, with tons of bluffs and the Mississippi River running along HWY 61. If you end up in Red Wing, there is tons of quaint shops - antiques and all that kind of stuff, as well as the Red Wing Pottery and the Red Wing Shoe Co. that have outlets. there are cafes, hotels and drive-ins as well. this is probably some of the most gorgeous landscapes available within 3-4 hours of Des Moines. IMHO
