First step... you need the to have the trouble codes read.

Welcome to the Herd; lots of friendly knowledgable folk in these forums.
Is your 2001 SportTrac
the earliest Job1 version with IntakeManifold shaped like a Pretzel & OilFill on left ValveCover,
or the later Job2 version with newer Intake design & OilFill on right ValveCover?

Ditto, on having the ODB2 TroubleCodes scanned, start with that.
ABS Indicator & wheel noise could be related; may be a
bad BearingHub\ToneRing\SpeedSensor on the same Wheel; ScientificWildAssGuess at this point.
Needs an eyeball inspection & again ODB2 Codes; write those specific code numbers down.

The codes I found. P0156/p1633 / p0420 /p0301/ not sure if any of these effects the over drive?

p0156 = OxSensor22 LeftBank2 DownStream CircMalFunc
p0301 = Cylinder1 MisFire
p0420 = CatCon RightBank1 EfficiencyLo
p1633 = KeepAlive VoltageLo

Does the "OD Off" lamp come on briefly during bulb test after turning key to RUN;
these Clusters need to have all the bulbs renewed every 10years or so.
How old is Battery; should be renewed every 5~6years.
Voltage at Battery should be ~12.5v engine off; ~14.5 engine cold idle; ~13.5v engine warm idle.
How old are Plugs+Wires & OxSensors; should be renewed every 100kMiles\12years.
Click here for more info on OBD2 Scanners & TroubleCodes.

New battery last week. The OD lamp works like it should. Plugs wires New. Just need to get OD working first. Could the speed sensor in the trans cause OD not to engage? Or dose OD have a fuse?

So, if you push the OD button the indicator light will turn on/off as it should?

That OD toggle button & wire thru the column shift tube is a NotoriousFailureItem; button can get dirty crusty & wire tends to short or break at sharp turn inside the steering column. New shift handle with new button & wire is available.

Personally, I would tackle the p1633 first. The computer thinks that your voltage is extremely low and it is potentially a cheap fix. The computer controls almost everything, if it is not working properly then many other things may not.

If you can... clear codes and check them again. If the p1633 comes back, locate the ground point for the computer (it is right next to it in the engine compartment). Pull it off the firewall and clean it up thoroughly, sand the paint off of that ground spot and reattach it. Smear some dielectric grease over it to protect the sanded area. Hopefully that will solve that code. While you are at it you may as well tend to the other three ground points in there... one is right in front of the battery, another behind the battery on the fender, another on the firewall to the left of the brake boost. I think there are at least two more but I have not found them yet (haven't really looked to hard though).

If the OD button is working properly how did you determine that it is not going into OD? Not doubting you, just curious.

I'm also curious here. I sold my 2002 Gen 1 ten years ago when I got my 2010 Gen 2 V8 so my memory of how it worked is foggy and the transmission is probably different. But on my Gen 2, the overdrive button turns OFF the overdrive and illuminates the light to warn you that the transmission will not go into overdrive. Is the Gen 1 transmission backwards from that? I guess I have the same question as blert - how do you know it's not going into overdrive?

Yup, that is how it works.

I replaced the shifter with a new one. The OD button works I can turn the light on and off. When driving the light is off but won't shift past 3rd.

Trans ValveBody Solenoid problem?
At 55~65mph steady highway speed, with OD enabled,
RPMs should be 2000~2500 when it does settle into OD.

Its ALWAYS in OD, its taken OUT of OD when you push the button.....
