Anyone want to share the pro's and con's of living in the Riverside CA area? I am working for a company that I may relocate me to Riverside CA from Nashville TN. Just let me know the goods and bads..... I have been there before 3-4 yrs ago on business but that was for business.

Thanks!

Trac N Tennessee

I live in Santa Maria, a couple hours north of Riverside. I've lived in CA my whole life and love it here, but CA has become it's own little world. I've watched it go down the drain the last 5-10 years. Stupid politicians, insane home prices, traffic, illegal imigration.... and the list goes on. But it is beautiful and has great weather. Has its ups and downs like everywhere I guess. I'm not sure what the cost of living is in tennessee, but make sure you get a big raise to compensate for how expensive it's getting here.

Maybe we can trade, I've thought about cashing out and moving somewhere more affordable.:)

pro -

houses are not that expensive compare to LA...

cons -

TOO HOT

everybody is moving there from LA

I hope your company is giving you a huge raise to offset the diffrence in cost of living. I live 1 hour north of L.A. and I hate Cali., but I can't leave because I'm military. It's hot, expensive, and expensive:angry: You get way more bang for your buck anywhere else. Just my 2 cents.

But seriously...

A house in CA is different that in TN. If you want semi to new - you get 2000 sf. of cheap drywall and stucco for $300,000. You will be on a tiny lot with windows that look into your neighbors bathroom. It tends to be very noisy in these neighborhoods. Oldre houses (70s to 80s) that need to be completely refreshed or remodeled on large piece of land still cost you 70 to 80% of what a new house costs. Apartments are no bargain, and with the home proces going way up, you would be wise to buy now. Watch out for property taxes, 1% of 300,000 is 3,000 a year on top of a 1,500 house payment + 500 a month in utilities / insurance. It is expensive. If you have to commute on a freeway, you're gonna kill someone in the first month unless you are really mellow. Driving is terrible. Best if you can live within 10 miles of work. If you can't, rethink the move. Blistering hot most of the year, and the color and taset of the air will make you gag. Within an hour of LA, mountians, beaches, san diego, lakes, vegas. Lots of things to do.

I'm in Temecula south of Riverside about 45min. Cost of living is high, crowded and don't even think about driving anywhere on the freeway. The area is growing by leaps and bounds so if you purchase a house you will double your money in under two years. So if your company is giving you a housing alowance you could make a killing and then move back! I am personally selling my auto parts business and my home and relocting to Kansas City.Just to get back on the positive side of debt. Good Luck if you want more info email me. Outlaw

Other than Manhattan itself, that is probably one of the most expensive places to live in the US. Better plan on asking for a HUGE raise to cover the cost of living out there.

Darin, You left out the San Francisco Bay Area - very expensive to live. Realistically, there are pros & cons to every area of the country; it is just a matter of what you can live with, and what you are looking for. We have thought about moving out of Ca., but we were born & raised here - so we're in our comfort zone. :D

Goods - none that I can think of off hand. (Disneyland, the beach)

Bads - traffic, house prices, cost of living, taxes, insurance, traffic, smog at times, did I mention traffic?

I born and raised in Orange County (Buena Park) from 1962 until I moved to Riverside County (Lake Elsinore) in 1994. Did the 45 mile commute to work for ten years until it started taking me two hours each way. Relocated up here to St. George, UT (120 miles north of Las Vegas) and couldn't be happier.

My boss is looking into St. George and getting out of CA. He has visited St. George for vacation and loved it. Sounds like you would recomend it?

Jeff.

As a place to live, it is wonderful. In fifteen minutes, you can be in the middle of nowhere, at a couple lakes, or on one of the many golf courses. Vegas is only 120 miles away (Mesquite is even closer - 35miles). As a place to work, it is a little bit different. Construction jobs are prevalent, degreed jobs with numerous years of experience (me) are not. It tends to be not what you know, but who.

On another note, I saw on your profile that you live in Santa Maria. I used to spend Easter week up that way north of you camping at Lopez Lake.

Chris

Chris, cool! the pics in my profile with the S/T were taken at Lopez. We go there alot and wakeboard, its a nice little lake. Let me know if your ever in the area with the S/T. How are the lakes in Utah?
