I changed my oil this weekend and bought the Mobile 1 full syn 5w30 6-1qt bottles in the box

I also bought the mobile 1 filter to match(that was $10!)

1) I filled the filter with oil and then added 5 qts to the engine, is 5 3/4 qts total too much?

2) Has anyone used this mobile 1 filter- states it can handle 2x the capacity of contaniments

3) with 101,000 miles should I be now using 10w30- I live in Houston where it rarely gets to freezing temps

*note* with a little more than 5qts in the motor I don't notice the "Dieseling" or "rattling" noise I assume is the timing chain issue...

Thanks in advance for the input!

Dennis

1) Don't know

2) Not yet, but after my next change I'll be swapping the K&N for a Mobil1

3) I'm at 77k and I use 10W-30. It definitely helps with the timing chain issue.

Dennis, I'll try to answer a few of you questions on this...

First of all, if you have a higher-mileage engine, make sure you have no weak seals or leaks before switching to a fully synthetic motor oil, as this might cause a problem in some

motors due to the synthetic's ability to flow more freely at any given temperature,

thereby finding the weak spot, or leak, in your motor.

Secondly, if you are not currently experiencing any smoking or leaking issues with your

engine, stay with the 5w30 viscosity, as the lower number has to do with the ability of the

oil to flow at colder/lower temperatures, including start-up, when the engine is cold,

but the outside temperature may be in the normal operating range of that particuliar

viscosity of oil, and will reduce your start-up friction, which is where up to 80% of

engine wear can occur. The higher(30w) number will still be the same when the engine

is up to normal operating temperature, thereby preventing smoking or blow-by at

normal temperatures/operating speeds.

Third, I've read good things about the Motorcraft factory oil filter for our 'Tracs.

If you want to go the extended mileage most of the synthetic oil manufacturers say

you can, change your oil filter about half-way through the recommended life of the

oil, to make sure you still have good filtration.

And, yes, if you have a vertical type oil filter, (the type that hangs "straight down")

always fill it up with oil before installing! This will prevent those crucial few seconds

after an oil change, of the oil pump trying to fill the filter up with oil, before the oil

actually gets to the moving parts!

P.S....

I buy the Mobil One at the local Wal Mart for 21.97 in the five-quart container, rather

than the individual quarts. 160 oz., for 21.97 vs 5 - 32 oz. containers (160 oz) at

5.19 a quart. The five quart container works out to $4.39 a quart, a savings of $4.00

per oil change, doing it myself. Enough to pay for my Motorcraft filter at the local

Auto Zone price of 4.29!

1. Yes, but it might not be enough to hurt anything. Capacity is 5 quarts with the filter.

2. Yes I've used it. It is doubtless a better filter but I don't need $11 worth of better. It is heavier and more likely to survive a whack off a rock if you go off-roading. Filter media is synthetic, which allows uniform porosity, which paper media does not. Ditto all this for a K&N oil filter too.

3. 10w-30 would be fine in Houston. That said, Mobil 1 5w-30 is extremely tough stuff which makes their 10w-30 kinda superfluous.
