I am considering subscribing to an online movie rental service. I am looking for opinions on them (good and bad). Both Netflix and Blockbuster are the same price. My mother-in-law subscribes to Blockbuster and gets her DVDs the day after she orders them (They live about 5 miles away, so I think the speed would be similar). They have not lost a DVD in the mail yet and have been subscribed for a little over a year.

For now regular DVD's will be what I am renting, but I will be getting HD DVD in the near future, and was wondering if anyone knew if either service will have that available. The HD player I will be getting is the one that hooks up to my Xbox 360. From what I have read on it, it seems to be a pretty cost effective way to get into HD DVD (200 bucks for the player) and what I have seen of the Blu Ray (PS3) it has not impressed me....

I have Netflix. Even when I lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere, DVDs got to me in a day or 2. Only problem I had was a DVD was in the wrong sleeve when I got it. All I had to do was mark a box on the sleeve, and send it back...2 days later had the right one in the mailbox.

I just looked on Netflix, and you can get both formats, so you should be covered with whatever high def format you go with :)

I can vouch for Netflix here. Free to my door, one day ship, and tons of selections. Only a couple of lost discs but they were instantly replaced and they do eventually show up. Just send them back. Only a couple of cracked/unplayable discs in about a hundred so far. I think 98% is pretty good.

I've had netflix for 2 yrs and with anything some things will happen beyond their control (mail being late and what have you) but I have gotten acouple movies in the mail that would freeze and such. I'm pretty close to a mailing location (they have a map on there site that tells you where the closest warehouse is too you in your state) lucky for me mine is like 30mins away. I have the 4 at a time rental and I'm very happy with there service I usually copy the movie to my PC and send it back the next day and watch it when I get too it (I don't have cable so I watch ALOT of movies).

i've had blockbuster for 6 months... i like the return to store for free movie deal, plus printable coupons for 2 extra movies a month. .. i chose the cheapest plan $10 a month for 1 movie at a time.. i've been getting between 8-10 movies a month... pretty cheap for $10...

I had block buster for a few years now. Service is great, never an issue. Once they did not get a movie back, I told them I mailed it and they cleared it from my account and that was that.

Recently I canceled them and went with Inmotion which is at almost every airport. Since I fly 5 days a week this is a better system for me. You can rent it from any airport and return it at any airport. For me, this is perfect as I am in 2 to 4 airports a day.

They have both formats as well. Cost is $15.00 for two movies or $19.00 for three. The key here is that I live in airports so I went with the $15.00 as I can exchange them as often as I desire. In one case, I got 4 different movies in one day.

One VERY nice feature with the Block Buster is the free local store rental you get and the goodies type coupons. It will be something like, "Rent two movies (free with coupon) and get a Jiffy pop pop corn and 2 liter bottle of pop". So you get it all for free and go home and watch it with the family and munch on the snacks. They also do the same kind of offer with ice cream.

Both services are good but it really depends on where you live. I am in NY (long island) and have used Netflix, Blockbuster, and even Intelliflix. I have had Netflix the longest, over 3 years, and they are the only one I use now for a few reasons. The biggest is the speed. For some reason Blockbusters processing and shipping was about 3 days to me and Netflix manages to do it in 1. Sure, Netflix will throttle you if you rent too many movies but that is not a problem for most. Another thing I like about Netflix is they add movies to their queue even before they are released in theaters. This way you can search for movies coming out, or in a theater and add them to your queue and not forget about them later on. Most movies on Blockbusters site are not available until just before the movie is coming to DVD. Netflix also has a better selection of the older and rarer movies. The 1 good thing about Blockbuster is you can rent a couple of free movies from the store each month.

Defiitely stay away from Intelliflix--they are terrible!

Both Netflix and Blockbuster offer free trials so give them both a shot and see how you like it. Remember you are going to get their best service during this time because they want to keep you.

I don't know if you can see the link below without being a member but Netflix already has HD DVD's and Blu-ray available.

I have used both but I am using blockbuster now. The nice thing is that I dont have to send them back through the mail, I can just bring them to the store and the new movies ship out the next day. That way I dont have to wait as long.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like Netflix is the way to go for me. I like the fact that I can add movies to my list while they are still in the theaters. I don't go the store to rent movies now, so the bonus rentals from the B&M store are not necessary.

My wife will go to the mall and buy 1 or two movies a month, watch them once then put them on a shelf. With this she still gets to watch the movie once, and it will cost about the same, but we can get more then the one each month.

I use Netflix...I was an early adopter. I stopped using it because I went through over 300 movies in their library back in 2000, 2001 and then they started to have slow-downs in shipping and in sending new releases.

However, I re-upped about 5 months ago and the service is much better. During that lapsed 5 years a distribution center was opened up about 20 miles from my house, so I get two-day turn around.

Also, Netflix's library depth is HUGE, and rich, especially in independant films, which I enjoy VERY much. They are actually much better than the Hollywood blockbusters, on average, and the reason I perfer Netflix over other services that don't have a rich a diverse a library.
