OT: Time Best Photos of 2006

They're interesting, and good photos--but frankly, not as good as what I've come to expect from Time...

The only two I personally feel deserve to be called best photos would be the volcano and the Tour-de-France.



The rest of the photo's, IMO, are disgusting. War is not something to glamorize.

Instead of taking the photo of the folks breaching the border wall, I would have pulled them back by their jeans. Sigh.



The photos, while arguably not the "best," do tell the stories of the year.

I think they're pretty good.



Since Time is a news organization, I imagine that they believe a good picture tells its own story and the story of its subjects. That image still has to fulfill the technical elements of what makes a good photo, like subject, composition, light, and perspective.



So, I'm pretty damn sure that their choices have nothing to do with glamorizing the war. Whether you believe in it or not, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are newsworthy, and covered in person by thousands of the media of all different types from dozens of countries. They happen to take a buttload of pictures. A very small percentage of those pictures happen to end up in Time. They're used to help convey the news.

Personally, I think the last one of the soldier resting in the daylight is pretty powerful and a pretty decent shot. The volcano is another.
