Unfortunately this has been a pretty common occurrence. I almost bought a Chevy Avalanche that was listed in Texas before I bought my ST. Turns out the guy was in Italy (or so he said). If a listing ever says not to contact them through the eBay system, then big RED flags should go up. No legitimate seller would do that.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm working with paypal to get my money back on an auction that I was taken on. Everything looked legit, and he fooled 6 or 7 of us. Paypal has been refunding the money pretty reliably, and if the seller does not respond by the 18th of July, I will be awarded a refund.

This is the third time I have run into a scam. On the first, a seller listed a bunch of items specifically to scam people. This was the last time I ever sent a money order for something purchased on ebay. I was able to get some of my money back from the ebay fraud protection, but only $175 of the $250 that I sent.

The second was a case of identity theft. Luckily the original owner of the account found out and sent me an e-mail telling me that it had happened. This was for an $1800 camcorder that normally lists for $3000. On his auction, he said that he has several for sale, so several other people were e-mailing me for months on end asking if I had bought one since I clicked the buy it now auction.

This third one I'm not sure if it is identity theft, or if somebody is actually doing it themselves. By using paypal, you'd think they could easily track down the person who accepted the funds either through the information to set up the account, or by their bank information to transfer the funds to. I wonder if paypal will proceed with it though.

Ebay is a dangerous place anymore. I will still use them, but only with paypal, and only with the buyer money back guarantee.
