What would you do if this happened to you?

You go to a store, park farrrrrrr away from any other vehicle, I mean 12-15 spaces from any other vehicle. You go in the store, pick up one thing, you're in there 10 minutes tops. When you go to your vehicle, you find that someone obviously went out of their way to park so close to yours that even from 50-60 feet away, you know you've been doored, unless they crawled out their passenger side. When you get to your vehicle you find that they doored it so good/bad that they took a chunk of paint out, not just a bruise. You're certain there's no surveilance cameras or witnesses.

Just curious, what would you do?

Thanks for your time. :D

Get license plate number and call police dept to report an incident. Call your insurance agent and give him/her offender's plate number. What you do not do is vandalize the other vehicle. As soon as you do that, then you are saying it's OK for someone to do it to you.

Take down the other owner's plate and vin number (should be on the dash visible through the lower driver's side front windshield, and wait for them to come back to ask for their insurance information. Take a picture if possible (I now keep a disposable camera in my glove box).

That happened to me on Sunday - except no free parking spaces. I now have flaky paint and a 1/8 inch round spot of exposed plastic. Wife was in truck at the time and she told me said he looked shocked so he knew he'd done it - she also said she thought the wind caught his door. I was stood on the other side jump starting a Lexus  at the time. Although the initial thought was to go brain the guy, I let it go and went in and enjoyed the race. :)

Fred,

Question. Was the vehicle still there when you got there or was it gone by time you got back to your vehicle?

Assuming the vehicle was still parked next to your vehicle when you go back, and not knowing where the driver may have gone, I would take the satisfaction of dooring them back. But take note of the registration number in case.

If the vehicle had already left, just feel the hurt. I did. Huge dent in the passenger side of my car.Had to foot the bill on my own.

In another case recenty I had to squeeze into my ST. after I had taken the precaution of parking away from everyone, some idiot, decided to park so close I could hardly open the door to get in, so I doored him. What made me mad was that there were closer spaces to the store that they could have used.

Sorry man I feel your pain...

Thanks for the responses. Would the police really respond to a call for this? I would like to think they would, because if it ever happens again, I'll call and some jerk (or their insurance) is gonna have to fix my vehicle.

I t happened to me.

Did as Bill E described. And let me tell you. The female owner was PISSED. She was just plain ol nasty.

But I was right and she was wrong. Officer told her to pay out of pocket or use insurance. But it was her responsibility to settle the issue.

She paid cash..

Fred, first, you have to divorce EVERYTHING but the facts, what you can prove, and what is pertinent from your thought process on this incident.

What Is Pertinent:

- Your door was dinged

What You Can Prove:

- You tell me? (seriously, what can you prove?)

What is NOT pertinent:

- Where you were parked

- That many other spaces were available

- That the person was parked very closely to your vehicle

So, looking at it like that...You were dinged, you assume you know by whom, but the question is, "What can you prove?"

TJR

Police probably won't respond. In many jurisdictions they won't respond if incident occurs on private property; which to them is any land that doesn't belong to the public. But, you can always go to a police station and file a report.

The vehicle was still there. I wanted to destroy it or wait for the owner to come back and open a can on them. I'm not for vandalizing anyones stuff, even if they deserve it, but it sure would have felt good to kick their quarter panel in.

I'll try the police thing if it ever happens again.

Could you see your paint on the vehicles door? Now that's proof. Or, another form of prove might be that you and another witnessed the incident (didn't happen in this case, but I am just saying). So, again, Fred, what could you have proven?

BTW, it sucks!

Maybe it wasn't the vehicle parked right next to mine. Must have been a UFO.

Yeah there was white (maybe mine, but I can't prove it) paint on their door.

They could have banged the crud out of someone elses white vehicle.

I wasn't trying to put on my "Dick Hat" with that line of questioning, Fred. But recognize that is exactly the way the police deal with such things if you call them. Ultimately they will ask "Did you see them hit your door?" and if you can't answer "Yes", and preferrably have another witness, the rest is all just circumstantial at best.

Police probably would not come unless your in a small town. And your deductible probably exceeds the repair cost so your probably screwed. Although I agree with everyone saying not to retaliate, I must admit I have made a few dents with my foot in other asshole's vehicles on more then one occasion after doing the same thing or taking up 2 parking spaces. Don't lecture me, I know it was wrong but it sure felt good at the time. I just have no patience for rude drivers.

Yeah TJR, I guess you're right. It sure sucks how jerks can get away with being jerks though.

Fred,

The reality is if you did not see it happen and there are no witnesses, you can't prove anything.

I had a very strong hunch who made the dent in my door but I could not prove it. (Won't go into details...TMI). However the police will only do something about it on or off private property if someone else had witnessed the incident.

Other than that they will only take notes and give you a case number.

Why tell insurance company, if you can't file claim and nothing will become of the case. (Rate increase?

TJR has it right in my view.

I also retaliated once, not this time. I was at Gatlinburg at a Hotel. I was walking toward my vehicle, it was an older one that I didn't care about THAT much. Anyway, right as I was about to get to it, this jerk bangs it pretty good with his door. Well, I saw this one and he was still there... muahahaha. I unlocked my door, opened it just enough to get a good hold and SLAMMED it into his car, HARD! I mean HARD!

He looked at me like he wanted to say something, but didn't. I'm glad he didn't.
