Well finally got my PCS orders (permanent change of station) and we are headed to Warner Robins, Georgia. All we know is what we have seen on the internet, so if anyone is familiar with the area rattle off. From what I hear it's fairly close to Macon, GA. I'm just glad to finally be leaving the mojave desert.:)

Not much there. Macon is a pretty poor town. They do have the Georgia Music Hall of Fame there though. I have seen the B-52's and other really good bands play there, and mostly they were free to the public concerts. They also have the Cherry Blossom Festival there each year, which is a big street party with different genres of music. I live about 1 hour west of there in Columbus and have been to Macon about a dozen times in my life, not somewhere you would just pick to go unless you were going there for a reason. I am not real familiar with Warner Robbins.

Big Sed,

Never stationed there, but TDY there enough I might as well have been. Warner-Robins: small city, roll up the streets at 9:00pm kind of place (but maybe more than you're used to seeing in Lancaster or Cal City), two major streets that pretty much run the length of the city. All of the franchise restaurants, and a few really good local places. One mall. The base is at one end of town. Lots of civilians at Robins AFB: it's an aircraft maintenance depot, and also has depot management for a lot AF aircraft that don't get maintenance there - really tough getting out of the gate at quittin' time. More defense contractors than the law should allow. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one (which could be a good thing if you're going to separate/retire soon). Nice golf course with a weird layout. If you're coming from California, the housing prices are gonna shock you (in a good way). I'd say it's a good place to raise kids. Didn't go to Macon much when I was there, but I'm thinking Macon's about 20 miles away or so, Atlanta's about 2 hours, but I-75 is right there.

Where're you going to be working there?

Kefguy,

Thanks for the info. I'll be working with the LANTIRN Support depot team. I'm pretty excited about the move. I hate the fact I have to drive 45 minutes to get to a town out here. We have a report no later of 30 Nov so the clock is ticking. Thanks again for the information.:)

Keep those LANTIRNs working nice! Have many hours running those things in the Navy. Lots of new pods out there now though. The USAF ought to be out of the LANTIRN business before too long.

Any base can be your best or worst assignment. I loved Kunsan AB, Korea, but hated Hurlburt Field, Florida. A big portion of whether you like an assignment is your attitude going into it, and the people you find once you get there.

Good luck at your new base. :)

Get ready for some southern living. As long as you are not into the big city life you'll be alright. The further south in GA, the better the football. Long story short, you'll be in the good ol' country.

Nelson, you hated Hurlburt???? I TDYd there so much I may as well have had PCS credit. Big, I've TDYd to Warner Robins as well and kefguy is spot on, sleepy town (too small for me), tons of contractors, and AFRC headquarters there. Very slowwwwwwwww there, lol.

Ken, I hated Hurlburt because of the people I worked with and my off-base neighbors. There wasn't much in town, and getting anywhere was a pain, since the nearest interstate was over and hour away. It also was way too hot and humid for my taste. Definitely my worst assignment, and I am on my eighth base now.

I'm with Ken. Loved Hurlburt and the Ft Walton Beach area. Lived/stationed there for about 14 years (with year away in Iceland). I'm only in SC because of my wife's job. We're looking at retiring there. Then again, most of my buddies, her friends are there, and I scuba dive and play golf - a lot.

Different strokes...

Big Sed, what kind of stuff do you like to do away from work, I mean besides driving/cleaning/polishing/modding your Trac?

Headed to Scott AFB, Il myslef. Don't know much about W.R. except for what I have heard people say...other than that...good luck!!!

MJ,

Enjoy Scott AFB. I drive through there several times a year. Maybe I'll run into you or Larry Phillips/NX-01 on one of my trips. My next trip is August 12th.

Hey Kefguy,

I guess I'll learn to love fishing and hunting seeing I'll be in the country now:). As long as there are some stores and a few good places to eat, I'm good to go.
