On July 22nd, I applied in person for a part-time job at a new Goodwill store. I was immediately disqualified and told I wasn't qualified despite having decades of leadership experience and a business ownership history. This morning, in a local newspaper, I found a letter to the editor by someone else turned down from the same place.
Yesterday I was personally destroyed by a child, a young female of about 20 years old.
Im a college grad, a former Eagle Scout, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and a college teacher.
Thing is, Im retired and still, after two years, looking for employment.
Im used to potential employers telling me that Im too old (they, of course, wont come right out and say it).
To get to the point, a store in Hudson was taking applications, so knowing this particular store I applied for a position (they encouraged people with diversification to apply).
Ive spent most of my life in leadership management roles. After filling out my application and turning it in to this child, I was told that since I had no retail experience in the last five years I wasnt qualified to put jeans and shirts on hangers!
I was mortified!
Of the 50-plus people waiting for interviews, I doubt that 10% were over 30.
So much for diversification.
I have words for these kinds of hiring practices, but I doubt theyre printable.
