I had some issues with my Jeep which resulted in the Jeep dealership replacing all 8 of my ignition coils. The only code that it through was a map sensor, which was not the problem so my warranty company would only pay for one of the coils. It didn't totally surprise me since more than likely it was only 1 or 2 that was causing the problem, but it wasn't worth the labor to pinpoint the intermittent problem when each coil was only $22. So I went ahead and paid my deductible and for the additional 7 coils out of pocket that weren't covered and preceded to write a letter to the warranty company. I explained the situation, and requested full reimbursement for the additional coils.

To my surprise I received a check today in the mail with a check the full requested amount. I thought it was a reasonable request but I am still pleasantly surprised that the company saw my side of the story and made it right.

Said company is Motor Warranty Service of North America which was purchased through CarMax when I bought the Jeep.

I know someone (I think Rodger and Georgia?) had a major issue with a CarMax warranty, but in my case it has been nothing but positive so far. So I figured I should write something up since all we ever real hear about companies is the negatives.

Glad to hear this. Personally I never buy any extended warranties, but I happy to hear that at least one of them are honest.

Could you give me a little more info on what your exact problem was, like the code and any symptons and what year, model and engine your Jeep has. I have never ran into or heard of this issue and would like to know a little more about it for future reference.

This is my first extended warranty, as I typically don't buy them either. I still have 3+ years and should only need one more repair to break even so it's a crap shoot like always..

The whole story on the symptoms/repairs.

I left of my epic road trip from CA to MI, to FL and back to CA. When I got to UT coming through some mountains I filled up with gas and pulled out of the way with the engine running to change my kids diapers. The Jeep stalled and the check engine light came on. I went to the closest autozone and had them read the code. It was p0129 (from memory so might be wrong) which was barometric pressure/MAP sensor error, Autozone guy said it could have just been from elevation change along with temp change so I cleared it and went on my way. Then it started getting worse, it was hiccupping on the highway when going down hills. It would randomly stall at stop lights, it was only happening when not under load.

It stalled in traffic while stopped at a light and actually went into "limp" mode, there is a light on the dash that is for the throttle body position or something like that, and if it throws a hard enough error apparently it reverts back to a failsafe mode or limp mode. So I replaced the MAP sensor. Didn't fix it. I was already back on the road to MI, so I just waited until I got there since I was staying in MI for a while.

Took it to the dealership, they thought they fixed it several times, but I got a call back each time that they hadn't actually got it. In the end they replaced all 8 ignition coils, all 16 spark plugs (yes that is correct 16) and some computer module that didn't fix that problem but something else was wrong with it. It was one of their first "fixes" so I assume it was showing some time of problem or else they wouldn't have left it in as it was $500. But apparently unrelated to my larger problem.

The spark plugs shouldn't have been an issue either as they were newer OEM plugs that I changed a month before leaving and hadn't had an issue, they just replaced them for good measure since they were cheap and they were grasping at straws to get the Jeep back on the road.

Vehicle is a 2007 Jeep Commander with the 5.7l hemi. These are known to have issues if running anything other than the OEM copper plugs so that was the first thing they questioned me on.

Apparently replacing all the ignition coils was the STAR hotlines idea (I believe that is who they call to talk to people at Jeep when they don't have a clue) and that is why my warranty company didn't originally pay for the all coils since it wasn't showing a code for even one of them.

When I worked at Carmax, they were good about taking care of customers for the most part.

AON used to be the insurer for their warranties, they list what is covered and what is not covered in pretty good detail on their brochures. Glad they stepped up to the plate for you.

Many companies are kinda shady, but Carmax has grown to be a major player in the car business thanks to former CEO Austin Ligon who spun them off from Circuit City.

How are you enjoying Oxnard? Been to Angleos yet?

Still haven't been to Angleos its one of those things everytime you bring it up I go "yea I need to stop in there" and then I forget because it's not my normal routine..
