Hey guys, I just completed my Wall mounted Tire Rack (except for painting)

[Broken External Image]:

There are more photos in my library in the "Tire Rack" Folder

I will be submitting a project on this. I have a MIG welder but decided to make this a bolt-together unit since some of you may not have access to welding equipment.

Mine is mounted to wall studs and is about 48" wide. My 4 tires weigh about 50 lbs each, so there is about 200 lbs on the rack now and I can still hang on the front cross bar.

It's constructed of 1-1/4"X1-1/4" angle steel, 3/8"X1" bolts, nuts, washers, etc. and is attached to the wall with 5/16"X3" lag screws. The fold up tire shelf is supporte by chains rated at 270 lbs and is attached to the wall bracket and shelf with threaded connector (chain links that can be open/closed with a threaded piece) rated at over 600 lbs capacity.

6 tires:bwahaha: Hey Richard, I'd put up a 1X6 or something behind the tires to keep them from marring up the wall.

Nice job..:supercool:

Code violation where I worked. Breaker box clearance..LOL

Sorry that stuff just sticks in your mind, after 30yrs...

Eddie,

Yes, I am sure that would be a code violation in most businesses, but in homes, it legal to put breaker boxes in cabinets or behind access doors.

There is actually full access to the Breaker box....I did a lot of measuring and made provisions to insure it would fit there and still allow full access. The door opens completely even with tires in the rack because the rear cross-bar is mounted 5 inches out from the back wall which keeps the tires far enough away from the wall and the breaker panel. If I would ever need to completely removed the front panel cover, it can also be done by simply removing the tires....and the fold up design also provides more headroom if needed.

[Broken External Image]:

I did not originally want to put it above the breaker box, but I did not have any other good locations in my garage. The front wall has a fold-down ladder to the attic and the rack would have interfered with attic access. I wanted to keep the other wall clear because that is the access path into the house and people could bang their heads on the rack as they walked by.

I could not move it left of the breaker box because it would block access to the water heater (that's the door in the corner...see photo). I could not mount it to the right of the breaker box because it would interfere with the overhead garage door and track. There is room on the right of the breaker box, but the location of the wall studs for mounting interfers with the garage door...

The width of the rack is dictated by the 16" wall stud spacing. The Tire shelf is about 47" wide and I have allowed enough ceiling clearance for 30" tires, even though I doubt that I will ever have need for that large of a tire. My MB tires are only about 24" high on 17" rims, but my Toyota Hylander has larger/taller tires on 16" rims.

TJR,\

No I won't be powder-coating it, but I will have to take it down to paint it. Either way, it's still a lot of work, but that will be another day. I wanted to clear up the floor space because I want to put my old 1990 Honda Accord in there to fix it up for my grandkids.

LaRue,

The tires do not touch the wall. The rear cross bar is spaced out about 5" from the wall and keeps the tires from actually hitting the wall or sinking too deep between the cross bars that it would block access to the breaker panel underneath....I carefully measured and calculated that into the design to insure that would not happen.

UPDATE:

This wall mounted tire rack project is now available on the Project page, listed under "Tires & Wheels"
