I don't know why, but I want to buy a Sony PSP. I did some searches on the internet, but I guess I am not finding the information I am looking for. We have some great people here that knows their stuff bout gadgets and stuff. I figure I will ask here.

A guy at work has a PSP. He says I should do myself a favor and get a PSP from Japan. He tells me it is better. He says the graphics are better and the software is better. I can not confirm this since I try to find any information about the Japanese lists just a software update.

What are your thoughts?

Tom

I don't "know" this but if you think about it, why would sony release two different hardware versions? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I would however bet money that the software is different. Typically on game consoles you can only play games from your region (very similar to dvd's) so maybe the Japanese version is "unlocked" and able to play both regions or all regions or something.

Have you checked the PSP Wikipedia entry?

I bought my son the Core set for X-mas, and a 2GB Memory Stick Duo from a very good reseller on eBay.

A wealth of knowledge is here:

JD,

Actually, North America is essentially a "dumping ground" for electronics. We get the "latest & greatest" gadgets right after the rest of the world already has them. It is very common.

Tom

I second what JD said. Companies will put out devices with region specific software but I've never heard of region specific hardware.

hey tom, am i reading this right.........

you want a product made in japan

my son wants one for christmas, so i am curious as to see the reply

Sony builds the PSP in China. Do you know of a handheld game system made in the USA?

Looks like I have no choice, if I had a choice, I would buy the US System.

Tom

tom, just goofin' around.

my thoughts are i dont care were its built as long as i get the best quality. i would prefer to by american made products only, but sometimes it just does not work for me.

btw, i purchased 4 more matrix , 2 camry's & 1 scion xb !!

Sony always releases their stuff first in Japan. Im not sure about the PS3 but im pretty sure the ps2 came out before in Japan than here.

Sorry about this but... Your work fellow does not know what he is talking about. There will be absolutely no difference in the graphics capabilities of the machines. Also, with regards to the software, I think what he is talking about is that way back when the PSP was first released you could get one with the 1.0 firmware version on it but the US version came with 1.5. The difference back then was that you could do homebrew on a 1.0 firmware but not on a 1.5. Well, much time has past and Sony keeps trying to block the homebrew devs, but now you can do homebrew stuff on firmwares up to 2.7 (still better on a 1.5 though) but chances are if you are buying a new one it will come with at least version 2.8 on it. This does not mean you won't be able to do homebrew on firmwares all the way up to 3.01 in the very near future. As a matter of fact, it usually does not take the hackers and devs long to crack the new firmwares Sony releases. On 3.0 and 3.01 it kinda looks like Sony might be relaxing a bit but only time will tell.

Now on to a few pros and cons of PSP...

It can do a ton of stuff. Games, movies/videos, music, web browsing, RSS feed reader, GPS, video chat, etc...I love mine and never go on a road trip without it. It has also served me well on the long nights spent in the ER (a ten year old and a one year old and a paraniod wife ;) ). It has a bunch of games available in just about every genre you could want. There are many more good things that can be said about it but lets move on.

Problems with it that are of concern:

It is getting it's ass kicked in sales by the DS. There is a reason for this in my eyes though. To me, the DS seems to be geared towards kids and the PSP to a more adult consumer (price alone suggests this). If your product is aimed at kids then of course you are going sell more toys.

Hollywierd seems to be shunning the UMD for movies and it's hard to find good/new movies to play on your little toy. A UMD movie will sometimes cost you more than the DVD version and the UMD does not have the image quality or goodies that the DVD will have. Not much of a problem for me though as I have never purchased a UMD movie. Instead, I get the DVD and rip it to a format the PSP can play and save it to a memory stick. ;)

About homebrew...

Homebrew is stuff folks out there have done that run on your PSP if you have the correct firmware version. Most of it consists of little crappy games and 'proof of concept' stuff. There are some nice things out there though (better text entry, better RSS readers, a few addictive games, new "shells" and some other things). I've never worried to much about homebrew but you will have to make your own decision on it and decide if it's worth locating one with an old firmware or just wait until the hacks and devs whip the newer firmwares into line.

One last thing... Since you are thinking about buying one, look into the DS also and compare what each can do and what games are available and then decide for yourself which is right for you.

Hope some of this helped. Good luck.

I recently sold my PSP and bought a DS Lite. The DS is cool, but I wish I had my PSP back. I second everything blert said. Have fun! :D

Tom.....most likely there wont be a differrence.....i have PSP (from North America) and it is great! If you buy one from Japan/China....you are most likely to run into trouble..1st you could run into scam- 2nd might get a faulty item-3rd if you need to get it fixed or something like that...most people will say no due to the fact that it was made over there........By the way you can by one on eBay,i just do notsuggest buying from Japan/China or a foregn country.

Blert,

Thanks for the information. It was really helpful. I like the idea of being able to get online with it.

A few questions for you.

Can I visit any website with it or is it only for websites designed only for the PSP?

What is the maximum size card can I use?

What options (extra's) should I get?

I have something extra I want to do with that PSP, but before I buy, I want to know what the online capibilities are.

Tom

You can go anywhere on the 'Net. Some sites may look a bit funky because of the size/resolution of the screen but if the website is designed correctly it looks just fine. You can even post to forums and such (I have visited this site many-a-times from my PSP). The browser is Flash capable and you can even design your own Flash games if you like and play them on your PSP with no homebrew hack headaches. I even designed a small section of my personal website to allow me to monitor my PC's stats (temp, CPU usage, net monitor, etc..) while I was away from home and I could shut it down remotely if need be.

Memory card size is up to whatever, I don't think Sony put a cap on it as I have seen 4GB sticks working just fine in one.

Options are up to you, they have a GPS add-on and a camera also. There are some other stuff too. I suggest getting a case for it of course and a car charger.

I almost forgot to tell you about my favorite feature... You can stream MP3s directly to your PSP over the 'Net via an RSS feed. For instance, I have about 6GB of MP3s on my rig at home. I can access them from anywhere in the world where I can get a 'Net connection. Don't even have to copy them to a memory stick and bring them with me. The folks at work freaked out the first time I hooked my PSP to the sound system and started playing MP3s from my home PC.

Blert,

I can not thank you enough for your help. You settled it, I am getting a PSP for me and my wife.

Tom

BTW, Lumines and Lumines2 are, hands down, THE best games for the PSP, IMHO. Make sure you rent any game you are interested in at your local BlockBuster (or whatever) before you buy it.

Blert-

How'd you get your MP3 collection to play via an RSS feed? I'm sittin on around 14GB of music, and simply don't want to have to buy four 4GB memory chips to take it all with me. Even though my PSP has a bum battery, I still like to use it whenever I can.

I use this to help accomplish it...

http://pspupdates.qj.net/MP3-RSS-Feeder-v0-6-for-2-60-PSP-s/pg/49/aid/9515

...I do things a bit different than in the directions as I already have an Apache server running but just follow the instructions and you should be fine.

There is also this one...

http://pspupdates.qj.net/PLAYSTREAMER-V-1-0-Launches-for-PSP-firmware-2-6/pg/49/aid/14246

...but it's a trail version and cost $15 for the full version.

I've also been toying with the idea of creating my own feeder but have not had much time lately to think about it.
