Hi can anyone help me decide on the PSP or the Nintendo DS pros or con for either? I am looking to buy one of these for my brother he is 20. Thank you for your help.

No doubt about it, a PSP given his age.

PSP has better graphics, plays games, plays movies, plays MP3's, has Wifi, upgradeable hard drive and has memory card slot. Pretty much does it all.

DS has an OK assortment of games, kinda fun touch screen, Is Wifi but does not play movies, MP3's or have upgradable hard drive memory card slot.

PSP for around $200, if you look around might get it for $160 or so. Overstock or Dell always has the best deals on these. Every few days they both have 10 - 15% off sales which include the PSP.

DS for around $120, might get it for $110. Not much varience in price.

I have a PSP, and will vouch for it. Built in wireless, upgradeable memory, awesome graphics, can double as a portable movie player for traveling, good games... Go with the PSP

Yep, that's the builtin Wifi. Need to have a wireless connection to use though.

I see you're in KC, j. Was in Nebraska Furniture Mart last weekend and they had the PSP for I think $175. Not a bad deal for a local pickup.

There is one of each under our tree this year. The PSP for our 13 year old son, a DS lite for our younger daughter.

I suspect the PSP would be better for a 20yo.

I would go with the PSP. There is more options on it than the DS. I think my wife is getting me a PSP for christmas because I saw alot of info about them on our computer. I was hoping for stuff for my ST.

Also, you probably want to get a 2GB or 4GB Memory Stick Duo. With that kind of capacity, and a program like the one linked below, your bro can rip DVDs to the device instead of having to pay again for a UMD version of a movie.

I purchased the version of the software that works for the Creative Zen and am impressed with it. If you buy it, use the "Out of Region" ripping option, as a byproduct of its use is rips that are almost 2x faster for most DVDs.

Thanks Q....where is that link?

I assume it is:

http://www.pspvideo9.com/

It seems that program takes any media file already on your PC and preps it for the PSP. Does it also do the DVD ripping, or do you need another program for that?

I found several programs that do ripping, and several programs that transcode and package for the PSP, but few that did BOTH in one shot.

Doing the two steps in one can save a lot of time....and time is money.

Please let me know if that product rips also.

DS hands down. The PSP is considered a failure and I would be surprised if it is around in the next two years. The DS is cheaper and has more and better games. The PSP was a great idea that tried to do too much. It is an overprices MP3 player, a sub-par game machine and to small a screen to enjoy movies, not to mention that the UMD format is a failure (the PS3 is not even supporting it) and a lot of studios are dropping titles from being produced because of poor UMD sales. If he/she is a gamer, then it is the DS.

Ape Out.

I agree with many things you say, Ape. However, the limited games that exist for the PSP, even if they don't ship many more in the next year or so, should appeal more to a 20yo, then the games available on the DS. Nintendo tends to cater to the early teen and pre-teen crowd with its handhelds. Ultimately, it depends on what you want the system for. If you want more advanced sports and rpg games, and the ability to play your ripped DVDs, then it's PSP. If you only want games and are content with a limited supply of more adult titles, then its the DS.

j--

Have you considered asking your brother his preference? (Directly or indirrectly?) Or asking a close friend of his who might know which he prefers?

Otherwise--get the PSP, just because it's the more expensive one--and get it at a place with a good return policy. Be sure to give him a gift receipt, and make clear to him that it's fine with you if he wants to exchange for the other. If he prefers the DS, he can exchange it after Christmas.
