My interior drivers side rear door is not working. It will not open the door from the inside. I took it apart and it seems like the door handle is OK. You can set the door handle so it works once then that is it. It seems like the rod should reload it so it will work again, but it doesn't. Is this some sort od child safety thing. There is a lever to push back and forth on the inside of the door, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

any help?

mine does the same also. i think it's a common problem with explorer. my friend's '98 explorer does the same thing. i have to pull the handle pretty hard and push the door outward in order to open my rear doors.

There is a plastic clip inside the door that if the person opens the door too hard there break....

You have to take the door panel off and find the broken clip and replace the clip or the handle...

BTDT... if it isn't the child lock switch, the door handle mechanism is fubar... i've had two sets of rear door handles put in under warranty. The gear mechanism inside the handle strips out. The locks are under $15 from ford... If they charge you more, tell them that this is a major known dfect woth these, and to give you a good price on them... They take about 1/2 hour to install, per door... HTH

Ironically my 8 year old son broke the interior passenger side door handle on our ST the day we took it for a test drive! The dealer replaced the handle and clips before we took delivery.

I have since replaced all the clips and hardware again and it still does it occasionally.

Actually we had the same problems with our '98 Mountaineer too.

Happened to both my rear interior door handles as well..I bought some new handles for like 5 dollars off of ebay. Works fine now. Ironically, they both failed within a day or two of each other.
