I use both a bicycle and motorcycle rack (at separate times) on the back of my Trac. They block the rear license plate, even if no bike is on the rack.

I wanted to relocate the plate to the upper left corner of my tailgate:

The plan is to use a stainless steel plate frame with a built in LED light. I'll have to drill at least two attachment holes and a small hole for the wire. I was hoping to drill through the black plastic as shown, so it can be restored with black silicone if I need to change it back. Here's where I think I need to drill (wire hole somewhere in between).

My questions are:

1. Is there anything behind there I need to worry about?

2. Does the plastic on the tailgate come off easily? That would make life much easier.

3. Is there a recommended way to run a small pair of wires out the bottom of the gate?

4. I looked and didn't find one, but has anyone reloacted their plate before?

I plan to use a stainless steel hinge to mount the plate frame. The plate frame is also stainless and has a built in LED light to illuminate the plate. The hinge will allow the plate to swivel if I run with the gate down. I'll use a magnet on the bottom/back of the plate (frame) to keep it solid against the gate when it is closed, to eliminate bouncing. If this works out, I'll post a photo tutorial in the "Projects" section.

THANK YOU for any ideas or information.

I would leave the plate where it is and the bike rack on all the time so the red light cameras and photo radar don't get me. :driving:

I agree, Make some sort of temporary mount that you can move the plate to the rack rather then drilling the truck.....

and use the 4 pin connector for the power to a light on the bracket for the plate..

Car lots use magnetic frames for dealer plates. I know the bed and tailgates are plastic but you could probably find a way to make it work.
