?......My stock 2007 plastic running boards are starting to bleach(fade) out ! Does anyone have any idea how to paint such boards? Hate to spend 3 to 4 hundred for a new set.

I don't have info on how to paint them--but I want to ask how important you feel they are, and if you could live without them.

My running boards faded first, then shortly thereafter began rusting, badly. Not too long ago I simply took them off and tossed them--and the truck instantly looked about five years newer.

If you really like the look of the boards, or have physical needs for them (disability, young kids, pets, etc.), then yes, by all means, pursue painting or replacement. (If you go for painting, check them over for rust, inside and out, to make sure they're still in good enough shape for the paint job to be worth it.) But if you're not using them regularly, and don't mind the board-free look, I definitely recommend that you consider sending them to the scrap heap.

The gen 2 trac looks strange without the boards. The frame rails drop enough to be seen.

I would look into haveing them sprayed with line-x.

Should outlast paint. The exception might be an epoxy type paint.

I agree with Eddie. I have had my running boards off and on no less than 3 times, trying to settle with the look without and figure what I could do to mask the ugly frame rails. Even bought a different set of running boards to size up that had a sleeker less rounded look. Didn't like them, so back they went. My running boards are back on to stay. Good luck with whatever you do.

Thanx Guys.......I'm OK with the look and stye the problem is these being plastic the end sections have turned a cloudy white and the center section is starting to fade as well. Wish I knew who made them for Ford maybe they would have a cure? I imagine the important first step in painting these would be good preparation followed by a quality oil based satin charcoal paint. Something to learn here...keep you posted.

"Back to Black" by Mothers. Its what I use on a regular basis. Continued/repeat applications seems to have reversed the fading. It takes a few applications over a number of weeks, but it works for me on anything black on the truck. Bob

PS: cheaper than paint or Line-X and you don't have to remove the boards.
