Steve M- Sorry,"Bass-Ackwards" here. (You can tell I was flustered) ha-ha

Believe me, if the "One Time Disable" worked, I would not have gone through this.

The instructions for your '02 work, with the exception of PARK. (Must be in NEUTRAL on my AUTOMATIC) The CORRECT OWNERS MANUAL for my '05 has three mistakes.

I wonder if this "BeltMinder" defaults and "re-enables" the chime when the battery is disconnected. I'll let someone else find out. LOL. Thanks for listening, time for a cold beer, or "few". ;)

One time disable

Any time the safety belt is buckled and then unbuckled during an

ignition ON cycle, BeltMinder will be disabled for that ignition cycle only.

Deactivating/activating the BeltMinder feature

Before following the procedure, make sure that:

The ignition switch and headlamp control are in the OFF position and

all the doors are closed.

The parking brake is set and the gearshift is in P (Park) (automatic

transmission) or neutral (manual transmission).

The drivers safety belt is unbuckled.

Read steps 1 - 9 before proceeding with the deactivation/activation

procedure.

BeltMinder deactivation/activation procedure:

To reduce the risk of injury, do not deactivate/activate the Belt

Minder feature while driving the vehicle.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN (or ON) position without starting

the engine.

2. Wait for the safety belt warning light to turn off. (Approximately 12

minutes.)

Steps 35 must be completed within 60 seconds or the procedure will

have to be repeated.

3. Buckle, then unbuckle, the safety belt three times, ending with the

safety belt unbuckled. This can be done before or during BeltMinder

warning activation.

4. Turn on the headlamp control, then turn it off.

5. Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt three times, ending with the

safety belt unbuckled.

After step 5, the safety belt warning light will be turned on for three

seconds.

6. Within seven seconds of the safety belt warning light turning off,

buckle, then unbuckle, the safety belt once.

This will disable BeltMinder if it is currently enabled, or enable

BeltMinder if it is currently disabled.

7. Confirmation of disabling BeltMinder is provided by the safety belt

warning light flashing four times per second for three seconds.

8. Confirmation of enabling BeltMinder is provided by:

The safety belt warning light flashing four times per second for three

seconds, followed by three seconds with the safety belt warning light

off.

Once again, the safety belt warning light will flash four times per

second for three seconds.

9. After receiving confirmation, the deactivation/activation procedure is

complete.

Let me say this first. NOBODY rides with me while moving, unless they are buckled up.

NO EXCEPTIONS, front and rear. If they refuse to wear them, they walk. PERIOD.

To me, the chime is a BIG annoyance WHEN PARKED, in the heat, with the AC running, kids restrained in their safety seats.

This post is regarding the owners manual instructions I followed and repeated at least ten times, to no avail.

It is the correct manual. The instructions that DID work, was a reply dated 2/16/01 by Reid Johnson. (Same as Steve M's posted here)

The original message was posted as, "Belt Chime Deactivation", on 10/3/07, by Eltee.

First thing. My owners manual specifically said park OR neutral position. It only worked in NEUTRAL. Your instructions say, park for automatic tranny, OR neutral for manual. No go, for me.

Second. The nine fasten / unfasten repetitions did NOT work. The three time / headlights on and off / three times again, DID work. (As per YOUR instructions, in NEUTRAL ONLY)

Hopefully, this will prevent some frustration in the future. I ALMOST put my fist through the instument panel, waiting for the "air bag" warning light.

Finally, and above all, PLEASE BUCKLE UP, WHEN DRIVING !!! ;)

This one IS a bit more involved than the procedure for my van.

And I agree, if you ride-you buckle up!

Works on both driver's side and passenger's side, but must be done on each seat: [Broken External Image]:

My ST is an early '03, and it came with the 1st edition of the '03 manual, which was basically a copy of the '02 manual. The instructions for disabling the seat belt chime changed between models, so the 1st edition manual was wrong. I had to go to the web and look up a 3rd edition manual to get the right procedure. That's just one of the reasons there is so much confusion about this.

Kevin- I "memorized" those very instructions "word for word", to no avail. Think I set a "Trac Record" for attempted failures of a single task. ;)

Chris T- Now you tell me. (It WAS Ford's fault)

You know INSANITY is defined as "Attempting the same thing again and again and expecting a different result". Just thought you might want to know. :D

If you go to your dealer and get the seat belt extensions and plug them in, the warning will not chime. Leave the extension plugged in and connect your belt to the extension when you drive. This works perfectly. I have done this on both my ST's.

The extensions are free. At least here in Canada they are free.

However, ALWAYS use your seat belt. They will save your life. I have seen them do it many many times.

Strange that it's not working for you... The instructions I posted are from a Gen 1 owners manual and I own a Gen 2. It works flawlessly for me the first time, every time on both of my seats in my 08.

Personally, I am so habitual about putting my seat belt on that I feel naked without it, even in my driveway or parking lot. I reactivated the chime for my passenger seat since my passengers are typically not as habitual as I am, but I keep mine off for those times that I am just pulling the truck around in the driveway, driving across the parking lot, etc.

My point is that I can tell you first hand that these instructions worked for me, both deactivating and activating the chime. The reminder light still flashes, but the chime itself is off.

Good luck

BOTTOM LINE. The following applies for MY 2005 XLS:

2001 OWNERS MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS CORRECT. (3 Click Method)

2005 OWNERS MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS INCORRECT (9 Click Method)

FYI guys, thanks for listening.

Glad I found this post. swshawaii was correct, the 3 Click method worked on my 2005 as well! Big thanks, I was going crazy wondering why the manual's method didn't work.
