when starting a lawn, is it better to seed or sod? I have read sodding is alot more expensive so that may be the deciding factor for us, but what do you think? If we seed the whole thing, how long before it is long enough to walk and play on? I assume landscapers can do this type of project right?

Depends on the weather, water, type of seed mix used...

We seed everything, over the long haul it grows a healthier lawn..

Depends on several factors, I've sodded a yard twice:

1. In Atlanta, bought a 3 year old house where the builder sodded the front with bermuda and seeded the back with fescue. The yard was on a very slight slope and seed just didn't take well. It was a very large yard, but I sodded it and was thankful I did as my kids had an instant yard to play on.

2. My current house in SC was similar, had it built and the builder sodded front with bermuda and seeded side and back with fescue. I didn't mess with it, first thing I did was spray the seeds to kill them and then sodded it with bermuda. That was 3 years ago and best thing I ever did, neighbor moved in 1 month after me and still doesn't have a full yard of grass...he is running into the problem of certain areas just not being able to hold seed well.

Anyway, you have to ask a few questions. Do you have kids and want an instant yard? Do you have any drainage/erosion issues? Do you have a septic...I think it is best to get sod down in a new house if you have a drainage field? Do you have the time to put into the yard if you seed?

Personally, I think it is just a matter of what you what.

Look into hydro-seeding. They spray the seed and fertilizer on. and comes out very nice.

How big is the lot? That is one of the largest contributing factors that would make me decide. What type of weather do you have? Do you want something that goes dormant in the winter or do you want something that is green year round?

No matter if you seed or sod, put in a sprinkler system if possible. Makes your life so much easier. Even in the small lots, they are worth it. Doesn't matter if you seed or sod, you have to put as much water to both without causing runoff or flood for the first few weeks.

Sod - Might cost more, but far less time waiting on a yard than regular seeding. If ground is prepped right and is level, can usually turn out better than seeding.

Seeding - Far less expensive and depending on soil content and condition, layout of yard, etc, usually easier to install. Can be harder to grow if ground is hard or sloped because of runoff. I would look into hydroseeding in this case.

Me personally - I would sod it. My experience is almost identical to WC. In Altanta, it took me 3 years to get the seed to grow to catch up to the sod. Also took 2 seedings a year covered in straw and at least twice as much water as the sod did.

Watch the hydro seed MIX !!!!! The commercial guys will have too much weed and crab grass seed in the mix, Since most companies will not do a small residential yard.....

you will be pulling your hair and crab grass for years to clean it all up..
