I've got a knot in my stomach. I don't want to do this, but I feel I have to do it before my ST get's over the 100K mark. I'm at 98K now. I feel I need to explain that I LOVE my ST, but I hate the vibration at highway speeds that has never been resolved, and I don't want to spend money on tires, brakes, and fixing my rusty step bars.

That said, I want to make sure I'm pricing it right. Kelly Blue Book says that the Private Party value of my ST is $9550. Based on that, I'm asking $9000. Is that reasonable?

I've got quite a few extras, but not nearly as much as many owners here. I don't know how much value those add-ons add though. My extras include a $1200 ARE fiberglass top, XM radio, heated seats, remote start, bed mat, Diablo chip and a couple other things. Should I be adding on money for those extras, or just stand firm on my asking price because I have so many extras.

I've never sold a vehicle out right before, I've always leased. I'm gonna puke, so any help is appreciated.

Buying something new is cheaper then maintenance and a cosmetic issue?

Interesting. 100,000 miles is nothing on a car. If I were in your shoes, I would drive it until the fenders fall off.

Tom

No, definately not cheaper, but less hassle and I won't have that annoying vibration. Sooner or later, I'll have to sell it, so I'm choosing to do it sooner. That and I don't have the money for those items now, but when I sell the ST, I'll have some money avialble to save.

The 100K mile mark drops the value of a car by 1000-1500 dollars. It's really just a matter of perception, but people get scared off by the 100,000 number.

Wasn't there a TSB for the Trans-axle vibration? My ST does it also at highway speeds. However, mine does it around 80-85 mph which I use as a governor because I don't need to drive faster than that. The new ones they replae it with are aluminum and work really well, I think for about $500. My ST has 122,000 miles on it and I sill love it. Even when my fenders fall off I will still be driving it. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Tommy

There is. I took it in for this, but the service noticed some cupping on my tires. He indicated that I should get that resolved before having them diagnose any vibration. So I changed out my shocks, got the front end aligned, but I still had cupped tires. I was hoping they would even out, and they did, but now I need new tires. So I can't get the dealer to look at the vibration issue until I get new rubber.

You'd have better luck selling your ST parts on here. They will not raise the value of your truck unless you sell to a buyer that is specifically looking for these things. 9,000 sounds fair for an '01 with that many miles. Have you considered an '07?

Unless its an American car then 100,000 marks the 2nd round of major repairs...the first starts between 50K and 60K. I am talking "on average"...of course, individual results vary.

TJR,

Prove your statement. I have three of them that says you are wrong. I take that back, 5.

Tom

And I have had 5 domestics that all had major repairs (>$1000) in their first 60K mile.

I guess you missed the point where I said "individual results may vary."

But you, and I, prove nothing. I ask you though, why do you think so many people buy extended warrantys on domestic vehicles, usually costing them well over $1000 to extend their warranty to 75K or 100K miles IF most don't require major repairs during that period (as you seem to imply)?

TJR

100k is fairly high mileage. It's probably worth more to you at this point.

Look in your local paper to see what they are going for in your area and decide then.

That said, differing geographic/demographic areas dictate car prices and mileage opinions.

Whether it's the car or the woman you are married to as the saying goes, it's "Cheaper to keep her!"

If you like it and want to keep it than plan on putting money into it, like it or not. If you want a new car with fewer problems, but with a car payment then go that route.

I usually keep cars until they let me down and/or start nickle and dimeing me, then they are gone.

TJR

Sometimes I just want a new car that is shiny, no rattles or vibrations, and that has that new car scent!

This is the 4th vehicle in a row that I have had that has exactly the same gray dashboard. I think it is a decent design, but I am totally SICK of it. I want something different next time!

Gavin, that's a big part of it. I got lots of vibrations and and noises, and small things are starting to break. A weld nut or bolt head fell off that holds the lock assembly to my door, so my power lock there doesn't lock on it's own anymore. I'm not someone who has a lot of time and ability to fix a lot of stuff.

I too have had the same dash forever! two rangers and two explorers before this. At least the ST's was a bit different.

griff5268, if I sell it to the dealer or the wholesaler, I might take some parts off. If I sell it to another person, that may sweeten the deal. No, I'm not getting an '07 sport trac. I'm looking heavily at the '07 Avalanche. They finally built them right (search my other post on that topic if you're gonna flame me!);)

I bought my 2001 ST 5 months ago for 8600, it had 120,000 miles on it. I have put about 3,000 on it and have no big problems and don't forsee any. So I think I will be driving it for quite a while. _ Ron

STylin

I found Kelly Blue book to have the lowest prices for cars. All the dealers will show you Kellys value when you want to trade -in. Try Edmunds .com and even Fords web site for a car prices. I agree with you to sell your ST and upgrade to something newer !! I hope you buy American !!

No, TJR, I seen that part too. You made a statement "Unless its an American car then 100,000 marks the 2nd round of major repairs...the first starts between 50K and 60K. I am talking "on average"...of course, individual results vary."

Prove the average since you made a statement as a fact.

TJR...

I have a 1989 GMC Jimmy S-15, 248,227 miles, bought almost new (had 20,000 mi.

when I bought it). Granted, it has been owned and maintained by a mechanic for the last

228,227 miles. Major repairs (not including belts and hoses, etc...):

Water Pump; $30 (Lifetime Warranty);

Starter; G.M. Delco; $199 (Lifetime Warranty)

That's it, other than proper L.O.F.'s and the like!!!
