Of course, you aren't talking about Jeff C's grandparents, right TomT.

Our social programs have kept these people down, but at the same time, they always had the ability to get out through hard work if they so desired.

TJR

I spoke to a friend that left N.O. when he saw what was coming. He was prepared. Took his family and necessities to a trailer park in Lafayette. This guy was born, raised and educated in what it means to be a "coon-ass" (true cajun). He was prepared.

He told me that what you are seeing on tv is the stupidist of the stupid people that live there. He said that the silver lining is that all of these people will now be gone forever. Texas will be their new home.

Much of the city will be leveled and bare for some time to come, but after about three months of draining, there will be an economic boom that hasn't been seen in years. He said there are three types of people in N.O......the ones you are seeing on tv begging, the survivors, and the thrivers. The thrivers are going to see where the $$$ is going and will make the most of it to rebuild for the betterment of those that want to recover.

Good points, buzzworth. There will be money spent on unprecedented scales in N.O. during the reconstruction. Can you imagine the armies of carpenters, roofers, plumbers, electricians and A/C service techs that will be needed there?

Yep--to the point where people in those trades will go to that area (both to help out and to cash in) from all around the country, causing a lesser supply for all those trades in the rest of the country--and a resulting increase in the cost of such services.

I'm glad construction on our new house is done!

Where do you think all of those carpenters and construction workers come from and live? These jobs aren't performed by a large portion of Americans like it was inthe past (my dad and grandfather were both finish carpenters, until they became too old to do the job anymore). Now a good portion of these jobs are done by immigrants.

Jim Jim Jim...... (shaking my head) @ you too Fmarano! (for encouraging) :)

I already made my point earlier ..on another thread. I'm just spent now

:D

Back to the original topic of this thread . . .

I heard a report that said people were shooting in the air to get the helicopter crews' attention (out of desperation) - not AT the helicopters. If this is true, it makes a lot more sense than the other scenario.
