My Ford running boards are rusty. Apparently, they're worse than I thought. I tried to take them off the mounting brackets to sandblast and paint them, but the nutserts inside broke loose. So now I have a loose passenger side running board that I can't retighten. I'll have to sawzall or air chisel the bolts off. I think I'll just remove the mounting brackets and leave them off for good.

I pulled off my step bars & brackets for exactly the same rust issue. I did get some flak from the wife who finds it more difficult to get in, but hey... it's my truck.

I will keep them & eventually paint them with rust bullet which is an excellent encapsulate so I can get into my truck when I become an "old~er" Geezer. For now I actually like the look!

After purchasing my '05 ST I noticed the driver side step was bent/crooked. I took them both off and prefer the way it looks now. My wife likes them better on but like Cabrera said, It's my truck.

I wash the top of my truck by standing in the bed. I dont have step bars and my truck is lifted. My wife sometimes complains sometimes cause shes 5' but like has been mentioned, its mine, I may lift it even more in the future.

............and the truck bed will be the only one you're in!!! :bwahaha: :bwahaha:

I removed mine also but lowered the truck 2" so my wife could get in and out easily. She's 5' also. ( Official statement in case she were to read this )

Handling/ride is much more to my liking now that it's lowered! ( Real reason ):grin:

Steve, how is the ride better now that it is lowered. I wanted to lower mine but a mechanic said that the ride would be harsher? I like the looks of it lowered.

Took mine off and never looked back. I'm over six foot, so I wasn't using them and found them to be a pain stepping over them to get in/out of the truck. Just sold them last weekend to someone replacing their rusted ones.

After having mine refinished twice and rust for the third time I removed them for good. I don't miss them at all. My wife does though, but she got used to it.

Yeah right Steve, I'm sure you lowered it for "handling"

Andy (cabrera)- What is the brand and size of your rims? Very nice! :supercool:

just bought a 2004 without boards, was looking to put some on...maybe rethinking now.

My problem is the truck is silver, has the grey trim, roof rack, bed cover, etc is black. I cannot find grey boards, only chrome or black and I am not sure which will look better.

Steve, they are stock 16" x 8" MB Predators with a -6 offset. I bought them last year at Discount Tire Direct. They were $110 each. I took the opportunity to have them mounted to 255/70R 16 Michelin LTX M/S tires. Balanced chrome, stems, road hazard, new lugs & locks, shipped out the door 5 tires 4 rims was $1,150

Adjusting the torsion bars and installing 2" blocks changes nothing in relation to ride. The spring rate is unchanged. Handling is improved by lowering the center of gravity. Bigger/better sway bars would make an even bigger improvement but I haven't done that yet. I'm not saying it handles like a Porsche but it is noticeable. I do like the look better. The other Steve (swshawaii) has his lowered 3" and upgraded sway bars, IIRC. He can speak for ride quality after those mods.

You could probably convince someone here to part with their take-offs. Maybe someone closer to IL than I am.

Andy, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!:grin:
