"YOU MIGHT BE A MUSLIM IF..."

1. You refine heroin for a living, but you have a moral objection to liquor.

2. You own a $3,000 machine gun and $5,000 rocket launcher, but you can't afford shoes.

3. You have more wives than teeth.

4. You wipe your butt with your bare hand, but consider bacon unclean."

5. You think vests come in two styles: bullet-proof and suicide.

6. You can't think of anyone you haven't declared Jihad against.

7. You consider television dangerous, but routinely carry explosives in your clothing.

8. You were amazed to discover that cell phones have uses other than setting off roadside bombs.

9. You have nothing against women and think every man should own at least four.

10. Your cousin is president of the United States

11. You find this offensive or racist and don't forward it.

Nor do I, JohnnyO. Jeff Foxworthy, for all his shtick and folksy humor, is a very smart guy and wouldn't alienate folks or lower himself with such diatribe.

TJR

I got depressed when I read this and called the suicide hotline. I got a guy in Pakistan and he asked me if I knew how to drive a truck.

:driving::driving:

You might be a Muslim if you know how to pack a truck.

Sooooooooo Tom. He wouldn't make Muslim jokes and alienate Muslims but has made a career out of redneck jokes. Who the F do you think buys the most of his tickets/albums/etc ? You think he lives off of you "non-rednecks". Or do you think southerners are just too stupid to know he's making fun of them. I didn't know all of his sales came from you and everybody else in PA.

OMG, let's not poke fun at Muslims but everybody else is okay. Typical.

Okay, I've attributed it to nobody in particular. Does that make it better?

I wasn't aware that Jeff Foxworthy's number one fans were Muslims. There is no way that southernor (Jeff Foxworthy) would want to alienate his biggest fans by making fun of them.

Get real, Steve. There's no way that you can't see the difference between the way that Foxworthy makes fun of southerners, and the way that this supposedly makes fun of Muslims. One is insulting (and is meant to be), one isn't (and isn't meant to be).

Or do you think southerners are just too stupid to know he's making fun of them.

No, I don't. Or at least, until you made that last post, I didn't...

Steve M, Caymen,

No one said, and I certainly didnt' say that Jeff Foxworthy has a large following of muslim fans.

I simply said that IF Jeff Foxworthy said these things, we would likely alienate some of his fans and lower himself in the process.

Please let me explain.

Jeff Foxworthy calls a spade a spade. I have absolutely NO problem with that. I find it refreshing. There are REDNECKS in all parts of the country. It's funny to have a set of tests to figure out if you are one, or if you see one. JF's rednecks humor isn't insulting, IMHO, as it doesn't make fun of anyone but rednecks, and they are all over, not just in the south.

But the above list has nothing to do with poking fun at Muslims, and everything to do with defining attributes of the typical Taliban and/or Islamic extremist terrorists. As such, the list is insulting when it is entitled "You might be a MUSLIM."

If Jeff Foxworthy supposedly came up with the following list, would you still applaud?

You just might be a Southern Christian...

1. If you ever took a bomb to an abortion clinic.

2. If your Sunday best includes a white hood.

3. If you long for the good old days of segregation

4. If you've ever told a racist joke to your preacher, and he laughed

5. If you agree with the 'God Hates ****' protestors

My point is, the list I just gave is just about as funny, and just about as narrow-minded in its painting a large, entire group with a broad brush stroke of stereotypical actions as the first one posted.

Jeff Foxworthy is too smart to do that...which is why I am still a fan of him.

P.S. Bill V gets it. My issue was the confusion between MUSLIM and ISLAMIC EXTREMIST TERRORIST. People that dont' see a difference should also assume that all Christians are KKK members.

Actually Tom ............. I laughed!

It's POKING FUN at rednecks, at Muslims, at Southern Christians.:banghead: Did you insult me by posting that .......nah. If you , I or he were serious then that's a different matter.:smack: Of course you'd have to have a sense of humor.................:btddhorse:

Your reaction is more like reverse Islamaphobia !:cheeky:

Let's see Tom, I believe this is in YOUR library. But that's different I'm sure!

TJR,

I guess my point wasn't made. A black guy can call another black guy a "*****" and it is fine. If a white guy said that to a black guy, the crap would hit the fan. Jeff Foxworthy is from Georgia. That gives him the right, IMO, to make fun of rednecks.

I agree with your, and JohnnyO's, comment that it wasn't Jeff Foxworthy to make those comments about Muslims.

He does have more class than that. Sometimes the best thing to do is not stir up a hornets nest. While I find the jokes funny, I still think it is in bad taste and offensive to pin this on Jeff Foxworthy.

Tom

With that explanation, I now see why you are allowed to make fun of mentally retarded people. Its just the pot calling the kettle black.

:bwahaha:

Notice, if you will, that the original reference crediting this to J.F. was removed. I could not remove subsequent references that were not my posts. I reposted this from an e-mail I received without verifying it was in fact from J.F.. My regrets to that fact. Still, personally I find it, how shall I say, :bwahaha::bwahaha::bwahaha::grin:

So, Tom Caymen, everyone from Georgia is a redneck? Is that like everyone from north of the Carolinas being an a-hole?

In reference to the mentally challenged, they are most always some of the most lovable people you'll meet. They did not chose to be challenged. I think this contrast with the topic matter is obvious without further comment.

And that is the comment from this southern Christian redneck cracker-a** whitebread good old boy.:kiss_it:

Come on guys. I think everyone is well aware that these comments weren't made by Jeff Foxworthy. His name is associated because of the "You might be a...if..." formula used. This is a silly argument just for arguments sake, IMO.

And don't confuse American Muslims who have had to assimilate to our culture or poor countryside Muslims in the Middle East who are just concerned with feeding their families with Jihadists. Of course not all Muslims are extremists, but there obviously are a greater number of them than there are of Christian extremists.

Comparing an abortion clinic bomber working alone with a concerted multi-national attack on the World Trade Center is ridiculous and irresponsible. Like Steve mentioned, don't confuse "open-mindedness" and "respect for all cultures" for reverse-Islamaphobia. If you can't recognize the facts for what they are, just because it might be offensive to someone that the facts are so appalling they don't seem true, you're not doing justice to reasonable Muslims or yourself.

Let's consider TJR's ridiculous comparison and see how comparable the comments really are:

You just might be a Southern Christian...

1. If you ever took a bomb to an abortion clinic.

How many killed? How many involved in the attack? How was it funded?

2. If your Sunday best includes a white hood.

There are currently 5-8k members of the KKK today. Do you really believe that is a comparable number to the number of Jihadists?

3. If you long for the good old days of segregation

Have you ever spoken to a Southern person that would say this? Islamists want a total holocaust of infidels. Women are segregated and hidden in their cultures. Christians and Jews are forced underground for fear of death. These are state policies. But that's different I'm sure.

4. If you've ever told a racist joke to your preacher, and he laughed

I've never met a preacher that would condone such behavior. In Islamist groups, the caliph would be telling the joke.

5. If you agree with the 'God Hates ****' protestors

This represents a very tiny minority of Christians. Christians believe God loves everyone, regardless of any wordly factors. Iran doesn't even acknowledge that there are homosexuals in their country. That is an entire nation deny the existence of gays, as national policy! That's just one country, too. The few hundred, maybe couple thousand who actually believe your claim is not even comparable.

To compare a few extreme Christians with Islamist nations and political factions who hold power is ridiculous. So, yes, there are some crazy people using Christianity as a excuse to carry out their own selfish and misguided beliefs. Its not even close to the same thing as when nations and political parties instill them in national policy. To pretend otherwise, just for the sake of not offending "moderate" Muslims is ridiculous. What are you afraid of? Is there something to be afraid of? If so, why? People make jokes at the expense of Southern people and Christians with impunity and no fear of inciting any violent reaction. Why be so sensitive to Muslims? Double standard?

Hugh,

Again, you missed my point in your last two posts. You went off on debating individual line-items as if there was some score keeping going on. That wasn't the intent of my point.

The point of the comparison is simply to show that saying all Southern Christians are like the nutjobs who have done the things I mentioned is at its foundation as unfair and misrepresentative as attributing the original list posted to all Muslims. That is the only point I was trying to make.

My comparison wasn't meant to start a tit-for-tat discussion. Such discussions are never that meaninful anyways, because they ultimately come down to pi$$ing contests and various degrees of "bad".

You seem imply that the painting all Muslims as extremists is somehow okay (or less offensive than my example) because their extremists are worse than, or have greater number than Christian extremists. If that's the case, and that is what you are implying, then that smacks of the "well we aren't as bad as them, so we are okay" attitude that I simply don't subscribe to.

All one needs to know to lead a good life they learned in Kindergarten. Remember the old saying: "Two wrongs don't make a right?" Well, if they are doing wrong, and some Christians are doing wrong, well then were exactly is the "right?"

The thing that is most wrong, IMHO, is characterizing everyone of a group as the same as the worst of their fringe.
