Google has been playing around with drive by wire for a little while now. It will be interesting to see how this technology plays out.

I think it has some potential benifits that could help to save lives.; this could help reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road.

This will be a hard pill for many to swallow. The technology is there for airplanes to fly themselves, but would you get into an airplane without a pilot in the flight deck??

What I'm hearing now is they might be looking into putting a dog in the flight deck with a pilot.

Why? To bite the pilot if he touches anything!

From the article......

In addition it suggested that the development would "insulate" motorists from disturbances caused by unnecessary feedback.

"For example, even on a road surface with minor ridges or furrows, the driver no longer has to grip the steering wheel tightly and make detailed adjustments, so travelling on the intended path becomes easier," it said in a statement.

I prefer to have the feed back. You can learn and know alot about your car. Thru steering feedback if you are a real driver....JMO

We already have cars that take us places without us having to drive them ourselves. Cabs and limos have been doing this for years. If people really don't want to drive cars themselves, but don't want to get a professional driver to do it for them (which it seems to me that many Americans do not) then it's high time for those people to move back into the cities and take the trains/bike/walk.

Don't ruin driving for the rest of us. Reminds me of the scifi movies where the self-driving cars are shown as a bad thing and the hero either has to fight them or use a vehicle that he can drive. Minority Report and I, Robot come to mind.

I went through the article and the benefits that Nissan claims this Drive-by-wire system will give seem inconsequential. They didn't seem "Earth-shattering" enough to merit implementing 'em to me. Kinda like Nissan's love of the CVT. Only the CVT supposedly has notable benefits, though Nissan doesn't seem to be bringing them to market. The new Nissan Altima claims to "beat Camry and Accord off the line" and get "38 MPG Highway" but those aren't very impressive claims IMO. That's 5 more MPG than my 2012 Fusion with a normal auto trans. I'd like to have the 5 MPG, but I'd rather get it from a tech with more benefits like SkyActiv or EcoBoost. My $0.02
