All my friends had VW "Bugs". Always hated the way they looked, sounded, rode, etc.

They spent tons of (parents) money beefing up the 36 HP air cooled POS engines. (Reliable though)

Headers, Weber Carbs, cams, oversized rims and tires, etc. (Looked like toads and were rear engined death traps)

I had a '70 Ranchero with a 351C that ruled, at least in a straight line. (Except for those damn Hemi Cudas)

Worked part time for gas money. Had a Pioneer Supertuner under dash Quadraphonic 8 Track System

that was way too cool, even when I was coherent and straight. Peace.

Great stuff Gavin. Need more of these feel good posts. Thanks.

Things I thought were cool in high school:

- my 1973 Chevy Nova SS Fastback

- my HS soccer team (league champs three years running)

- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

- Miami Vice

- Commodore Pet computer

High school was still kinda recent for me, graduated in 07.

The things I thought were the coolest were cars, and doing anything to em that I could

#1. big sound systems. I have built 12 different speaker boxes for my trac and had 6 different sub woofer combinations. The goal was to be the guy that got asked to play the music while warming up for soccer practice. Obviously the guy that got asked had the best system.

#2. Neon lights were always kinda cool but kinda not. I never got to putting them on the bottom of the truck but for a couple months I did have 2 blue tubes behind the grill. I still have them installed in the truck, but now they are behind the smoked plexy i used for the front face of my speaker box.

#3. Ladies....Ladies were awesome in high school, if I wasn't working on a car, or playing soccer, I was doing something to try and get ladies.

Oh yea my 1974 Mustang- I had everything spray painted on it to include gold leaf springs, red axle, white lower half and CB antenna, white shag carpet homemade speaker boxes on back seat. Lot of good times in that car, I wish I still had it!

The ladies were always, and will always, be awesome in HS, but the ones at my HS left much to be desired.

Things that were "cool" in HS:

->Lifted trucks, the higher the better

->Driving your lifted truck across fields and school property

->Ramming porta-pots with your lifted truck @ public parks

->If you didn't have a truck (2nd class citizen), your duty was to make your ride as ricified as possible.

->Coming to class stoned/high as much as possible during Senior year

But these aren't the most important things...the most important things to be cool were putting Truckin' Nutz on your ride, and a Confederate Battle Flag on, as many as possible. These were so cool that the school administration had to ban them

Forgot to mention the high school babes with the perfect proportions and tans. (Aka- gravity and turkey necks, today)

Ain't so "perty" now. Many of the "Plain Jane's" none of the guys paid attention to, are the "lookers" today. LOL

Time is not kind to women, or men, for that matter.

Looky today, ain't so perty. The "Plain Jane's" that none of the guys paid attention to, are the babes and "lookers" today. LOL

Shouldn't those women be getting to an advanced age nowadays? Age and beauty are only directly related for a short, very short, span of time (sadly).

"Dude, the cougar is still in there! I don't wanna get mauled!!!"

I graduated in 2008..my high school ride was a 2000 Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T. It was extended cab, lowered 2 in. Every bolt on known to man on the engine. Nice chrome rims on it. It would pass anything but a gas pump.

Clothing wise...HOLLISTER for those that could afford it...CARHART for those that could afford it. Our town went from total hick to totally stupidly rich. Our school parking lot used to have a 79 dodge d100 with 90% rust sitting next to a brand new ford GT...yes Ford GT..every once in a while that kid would get brave and bring his dad's lambo or ferrari to school.

Driving a Ford GT and wearing Hollister? That's like having your own private jet, but eating at Burger King to save money.

Eddie, I'm with you, class of '68'. Didn't own a car then, had to take the bus. Good thing there where good lookin chicks to ride home with! Black leather jackets and tight black pants. Did somebody say "Greaser"?

yea... i miss those days

Driving my Mom's 'vette was cool- literally! Her Chevette had air-conditioning! I could easily get a 2nd gear scratch with it too.

Underdash CB radion on a slide-mount, with antenna permanently mounted in center of roof.

I went through a variety of cars during high school: '67 Chevy Impala ex taxicab; 71 VW Beetle; '73 Ford Pinto; '74 Ford Pinto; '74 Camaro; '74 Ford Mustang II.

Got to be a 180 degree turn master in the Pintos with the handbrake.

saw the picture of the leisure suit and the Chevy Vega, had a '73 Vega GT (a 2 bbl carb & wide racing stripe w/ mags =GT), loved that car, not many people liked 'em but I loved mine since it was my 1st car of my own. Never did have a leisure suit though. remember the baby moons, cragars, wide tires in the back and skinnies up front w/ shackles, ahh, the good ol days. LOL

I had a rust color leisure suite with a blue silk shirt with a naked-lady print that I wore to church until the preacher said something about it.

Just listen to the song "1980-Something." It pretty much sums up what we thought was cool.

Excuse me. The song's name is "19 Somethin'" by Mark Wills.
