Im not sure what category to put this one it. I woke up this morning and walked out to my trac(its about 55 degrees outside so its not very cold) I start it up, put it in gear, take off the parking brake and the truck will rev but something wont let it move,, i get out, there isnt anything under the tires so i get back in and try it again,,,i step on the gas a little more and it was like i was breaking free of something,, i heard a bit of a pop and then it broke free of whatever was holding it back and now its fine.

Any ideas as to what this could be? maybe the e brake wasnt releasing? something else?

Thanks

Ryan

May be the e brake. My Dad had a '69 chevy truck that would do that when it was damp out.

When it wouldn't move, did it sound/feel like it was staining? If so, maybe it was the e-brake. If it just revved without staining, it could be the transmission not engaging. ;)

My Trac did that a couple of times last winter. It backed out of the driveway just fine, but sat in the middle of the busy street in front of my house when I put it in Drive. The brake wasn't on-- the engine revved like it was in neutral. After a few tries, it all of a sudden slammed into gear with a very loud "bang" and started moving OK. Ran fine after that.

Dealer said everything was fine and not to worry about it. (yeah, right). He said it was probably a "computer glitch".

BTW: Let me know if you find out anything on yours. My clueless (or crooked/lazy) dealer couldn't.

yeah, it felt like it was straining,, almost like there was a curb behind me and the truck couldnt back up over it. Im guessing its the ebrake, but i can t say for sure,, it is raining out like fred says, im curious how that could cause this problem, i live in washington, it rains 9 months out of the year lol

Ryan,

How long was your Trac sitting in the position?

I am leaning twards the E-Brake sticking. Drum brakes are garbage. They don't stop well, they are complicated, and are prone to stick. To top it off, they are ugly.

One of the many reasons why I eliminated my d(r)um brakes.

How much gas were you giving it? A parking brake won't prevent you from moving, even applied all the way, if you're giving the vehicle gas. A vehicle stays parked in one spot not from the barking brake, but from the transmission being engaged. Next time you drive the Trac, leave the parking brake on and try to move and see if that acts the same way. You'll feel sluggish when trying to move with it on, but you should still be able to move. My guess is the transmission wasn't fully engaged, it happened to me in my ST no less then twice, acted just like how you describe, revving with no motion, a loud pop then movement.

I bet one of the drum brake pads was stuck to the inside of the drum, You may have a grove or rough spot on the inside of the drum that it stuck to...

Next time try reverse and drive.. I would yank the wheels and check your drum brakes..

Ryan,

My Trac will not move with the parking brake completely engaged. Did the same on my works 1995 C3500 Truck, my 1992 and 1996 Escort GT, 2002 Spoort Trac with both drum and disk rear brakes, 1993 Aerostar, 1993 Thunderbird, 2004 Ranger, 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, etc. I could mention more, but I think that is enough.

Obviously, if you were to floor it, there is more power then the braking has holding ability. It will prevent the vehicle from moving, under normal acceleration. A parking brake will keep a vehicle from moving, even on the steepest hill. "P"ark on a tranny should never be used to hold a vehicle on a hill.

I gave it a decent amount of gas, certainly more than enough to move the trac if it werent stuck.

The truck had been sitting in my driveway for only about 12 hours or so, nothing too fantastic. The truck seems to be running fine now, i think if it does it again ill take her in and have it looked at. Im leaning towards the drums as well, guess time will tell,, Thanks guys

Gavin, need to adjust those babyes...

I have a steep driveway and my parking brake from the factory would not hold the truck at all... So I simply adjusted them, now with the pedal 1/2 to the floor it will hold no problem..

i had this problem in my 92 toyota camry. to solve the problem i called my friend (who is a toyota mechanic) and all he did was put it into park. and rev the engine to redline. i heard this pop. and then he dropped it into drive and it worked.

this was the stupidest idea i could think of to fix the problem but it worked.

I think it was definately your parking brake.

My trac has done this once, and my '89 blazer does it often if I let it sit for

more than two or three days with the e-brake on...:)

Try putting some lithium greese on the inside of the drums. That should take care of the sticking. Of course, you wouldn't be able to stop either! j/k
