A guy I work with says he gets 22 mpg highway in his 05 Explorer with the auto-4wd and the 4.6 V8. Thats better than I got when I went down to Mo. to pick up the OEM hard cover for my ST. I only got about 18.5. Could this be true?

Yes, that sounds about right. I did alot of traveling this past summer, and my highway mpg ranged from 21 to 23 mpg. (hand calculated) Also, on the vehicle's computer, I am averaging 16.5 mpg overall. I have never reset it since new.

There are so many variables when it comes to mpg it isn't even funny. I get about 15 mpg in my 08 4.0 4x2...the computer says I get 16.9 though. I have a friend that has an 05 Explorer with the V8 in it and he gets 18 mpg on the freeway...and he is by no means a fast driver.

I got 23.5 MPG once on the highway. I was driving very careful but driving around 70 MPH with the air on. And yes, it's a Gen 2 V8.

My computer mileage used to be off but after the last update, it is now right on the money. Not sure why.

I have never seen anything over 19.5 on my '08, V8. Trips to Maryland, Virginia and New England, all were combined city/highway. Even going out to see Todd, no difference. Oh well, just have to live with it.

PS: I do tend to drive fast, on highway I'll cruise at 75-85 mph.

My average MPG is 18,I just wonder after we get the check engine light off and it to idol smoother it would get a mile or so more.Hope so!But I am by no means complaining!

I get in the high 21 - 22 MPG highway normally and it seems to be dropping a bit after 30,000 miles. Probably those crappy stock plugs...LOL!

Right around 16-16.5 mpg in mixed driving for me. Have gotten 20-21 on a few trips, cruising around 70-72mph. Drops off from about 75 and up.

That's with an updated SCT x3 (87 Performance) tune, K&N aircharger and Magnaflow catback.

Gen II V8 gets about the same as the Gen I V6 I used to have (both 4x4) driving the same roads, commute, etc. They each get about 19. That's an average of some highway and a fair amount of some of the worst stop and go traffic in the country. I've found the V8 does better on the hwy (thank you 6 speed) and the V6 a touch better in stop and go. My records over 45k miles for each show less than a 1 MPG difference. I record the miles and gallons to fill for every tank. Although, now that my V8 has just under 50k I've noticed the mileage has been getting better so it may surpass the V6 by a bit. Only mod is a Magnaflow exhaust on the V8. Mileage got worse after the install, but it was still very low mileage at the time so it did not have a robust MPG average established.

Edit: I do get 22mpg on the hwy with the V8. With four adults, the bed loaded with bags and cases of water, gatorade, etc, and a soft car top carrier bag on top of the tonneau full of luggage I got 22 going to the Outer Banks.

The V6 and V8 get about the same mileage. The V8 comes with a six speed tranny and 3.55 gears where the V6 gets a five speed and 3.73 gears.

My V6 has a K&N drop-in and Gibson exhaust and I've seen as high as 23 mpg at 65 mph with the cruise on when I was in Florida where everything is flat. It's EPA rated at 19 hwy.

The all-terrain tires I got a few months ago cut 2-3 mpg off the top just like that.

So there are a lot of variables.

I get anywhere from 21 to 24 (highway) with mine depending on the speed. Heck, I get 15 towing at 65mph.

Usually I'm in the neighborhood of 18 mixed and a pretty consistent 15 in the city.

I love resetting the mpg gauge when I'm cruising at 40mpg (just shifted to 6th gear) and the numbers are around 38 - 42mpg. Love messin with my brother when I send him the pictures.

Edited: These numbers DO take into consideration the actual mileage calculated by a hand held calculator. The truck's on board computer is about 1mpg too high.

JohnnyO, what all terrain tires did you get that dropped the MPG? I am looking at putting some BFG AT TAs on, and moving up to 255s or 265s (stock is 245s), and have wondered how much that will hurt.

That's why all EPA mileage estimates come with the caviat "Your mileage may vary". As previously stated, there are so many variables that it's impossible to pick just one.

Mine seems comfortable between 75-80 and that's where I tend to be. Nothing weird on my ST, synthetic oil and keep the tires at ~40psi and be very smooth with the throttle, no unnecessary off/on. Always get 22ish on the hwy.

Firestone Destination A/T's, stock size, 245/65-17. Truck originally had Goodyear Fortera all-season tires.

An all-season tire has less rolling resistance than an all-terrain tire which has less rolling resistance than a mud-terrain tire.

Hey Canadians, We all know you are on the kilometer scale, but isn't the Canadian gallon slightly more than the US measurement?? This could be giving you guys some higher MPG readings, EH?

I'd hope they are taking that into consideration when posting their mileage. I'm about as far away from Canada as you can get (South Florida) and I get great mileage. I am of Canadian decent however, eh.

One definite advantage I have is that there are no hills down here.
