Since Im spending more time in the boonies, with mom. Since dad passed.

I broke down and got the verizon cellular usb internet. Not cheap but Im not up here stranded from the WWW as in the past.



I just have one question,, "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW" .....:bwahaha:

If you have a Verizon SmartPhone like a Blackberry, you can tether it over thier 3G or 4G network. My company has switched most of our cellphones over to Blackberrys and we are in the process of switching over to tethering and cancelling our Cellular AirCards. We have cell phone contracts with AT&T, Verizon/Alltel, and Sprint depending upon who has the best reception in the area of Texas that are people are operating in.



Iphones and several other smartphones can do tethering via usb cable or bluetooth, but the 3G works phenominally well. You can't tell you aren't sitting in our office connected to the network with a cable...It's that fast. The other benefit with 3G is you can talk on your Blackberry while you are tethered to your PC. You could never do that with the old Edge technology.



Cost depends upon you contract but we get our tethering for only about $10 per phone per month vs about $50 for a Cellular AirCard.



Of course the cellular providers will charge the individual more. AT&T now requires you buy the 2GB Data Plan for $25 per month and then if you want to tether to a smartphone, it's an additional $20

Rose has a verizon air card, they call it a usb broadband modem,,, anyway..... she uses it ALL the time. GREAT! Love it.... Plugs it into her netbook and off we go......

Verizon does not work everywhere or we would have switched everyone in our company to Verizon. There are many deadspot that some wireless companies do not cover or the signal is weak. We have a lot of places like that in Texas where the towns are further apart.



We have found places Verizon or AT&T do not work, but Sprint works great, even though Sprint has far less coverage area in Texas than the two big wireless giants. In most places around Texas, you can get a good signal from any wireless company ifyou are within a few miles of an Interstate or main highway. As soon as you get about 5 miles away from civilization you will loose your Sprint signal...but again, there are many areas around Texas that are exceptions.



I recently purchased a MetroPCS phone for my personal use. The phone gets a 5 bar signal at my office which is abot 3 miles from downtown Waco, TX, but I can hardly get a 1 bar signal at my house which is on the other side of town about 6 miles from downtown Waco. I have since dropped my MetroPCS and switched to AT&T. I have always gotten far better coverage with AT&T than any other company I have tried.



Also, you need to know that there is a difference between Cellular phone signals and Wireless Broadband signals. Because you may have great Cellular phone signals in that location does not guaratee that you will have any reception on a wireless broadband card. It seems that not all Cellular towers are setup for broadband connections. We found that out when we were setting up some remote sites and got great cellular phone signals, so we purchased wireless broadband cards from that company and often could not get any signal...That's when we were told that not all cellular towers have broadband data capabilities.

Works very well for me. I travel 5 days a week and very rarely have any issue with my Verizon service. Yes,,, I travel to well built up areas so I am sure that has something to do with it.



They are not eh cheapest, but I have found them to be very reliable for me.



I also has MiFi with them. I use the snot out of it and it works better than most service I would normally have to pay to use when I travel..

I am not knocking Verizon, they have a great cellular network that may work 100% of the places you go. But if you come to Texas, I can take you into some areas where Verizon will not work and AT&T or Sprint will, and that works the other way around as well.



My daughter lives in a rural area about 25 miles outside of Zanesville, Ohio. She has had a lot of problems with cellular reception with all the companies and she has tried them all. The phones work great at her house but rarely work when she is driving because of the hilly terrain.



Nobody had 100% nationwide coverage and probably never will. All the cellular companies are basing their tower locations on the population in those areas. If the area does not have a large enough customer base to make money, they will not put in a cellular tower and you will have a dead spot in that area.



That's why there are 3-4 major nationwide cellular companies and why people who live in different parts of the country will swear that one company has better service in that area than the other. So you cannot just say that Verizon is the best for everyone just because it's great for you where you live or where you go.

You know what I do for a living, thus, you know the travels I do.



I am VERY HAPPY with it. It is HIGH speed, no, but is is a very fair speed for using over the air type internet and as I mentioned, it often is faster than the service I can get at the various airports.



I got a deal so I pay 49 bucks for 5 gig service. It is a neat device as multiple computers can use it at one time.



Boarding a plane, will send more info when I land...

CJ, My 5gig verizon is costing $59.99. 2yr contract for free air card. Are you getting a special? I also have verizon cell service. Older phone LG 5300. Cant thether it. I asked, for a discount as I have been a long time customer. None.

Verizon Has worked for me every where I have been. Including out of state boonies. At&t wasnt.

CoastieJoe is both retired military and a current civilian gov't employee. Verizon offers an 18% discount to those in either of the aforementioned categories. That's probably why his rate is cheaper than yours.



On another note, my wife has a VZ MiFi card that she uses as an intinerant teacher. It's great. We always get a cell connection and good internet access. Only drawback is that streaming video doesn't work very well-the bandwith just isn't there on the MiFi card. But we can connect both of our laptops, and/or iPod touch to it. It's great for internet access when we go RV'ing.nline::supercool::banana:

Ok,, I am home again..



Eddie, you are correct about the current pricing, I was offered a deal when I inquired about the service and got it for $49.



I then get my total of 18% for being retired military and present government employee.



So for me, it is a no brainier.



As an example of how much 5 gig is, there were four of us that got stuck at Detroit airport and we were all logged into the MiFi. 2 of the guys downloaded 1 movie each and we all surfed for 4 hours just doing miscellaneous type stuff.



At the end of the month my total usage was only 1.58 gig. I have never used more than 1 gig thus far and I am using it probably 15 times a month for 1 to 3 hours at a time.



I have heard they will be stepping up to 4g capabilities in the near future. If this is the case, then the speeds and download capabilities will only improve I would think.



With streaming video, it does a decent job for what it is. What I normally do is start the video, pause it, go off and do whatever else, then come back to it and it is fine as the video does not catch up to the downloaded part.



The nice thing is, you can get it and return it I think within 30 days if you do not like it. No cancellation fees...
