So I went to home depot today and found out that veterans get 10% off this weekend. Luckily I had my expired ID to prove that I was one, since most of us don't have any proof once we get out.

I went to HD today also. The cashier asked if I was a veteran and I said no. He asked if I had any family members that were and I said, yes my brother. 10% off for me too!

Here in OKC, Lowes gives the 10% all year, but Home Depot only does it on Veterans Day and July 4th. I think Lowes sells better quality goods anyway, so I'd probably go there even without the discount.

Lowes gives 10% off here in Augusta every holiday weekend. Never asked Home Depot. IMO Lowes has a much cleaner atmosphere with generally lower prices.

I think it's kind of strange that Home Depot would offer a discount to Veterans when the Vet's can't prove they are vets unless they have a ""Retired" ID card, or happened to have kept their old expired ID Card, which I would guess that most vets don't, at least not for very long.

Perhaps it would be nice if the military gave honorably discharge vets a Veterans ID Card just as a courtesy. That is something most vets would hand on to.

Wonder if a copy of a dd214 would work....

I think I have a expired ID card somewere around here,,,,

Richard I agree with you on the Veterans ID as a great idea!

TracNJack,

Yes, I'm sure a DD-214 would do the trick since that is what is required by the VA or any military branch for proof of service. I just think a smaller ID Card with your name, service dates, DOB, military branch, etc., but not necessarily a photo. This would help the Vets to get the various discounts they deserve without having to carry around a DD-214. Obviously, if you were applying for VA or any other military benefits, you would need the DD-214.

As for the fear of someone counterfitting the Veterans ID Card, it's not a big deal, and it would not be any harder than forging a DD-214 with the right computer software.
