Which Brake Pads?

The Ford (not Motorcraft) are a bit expensive. I tried the ThermoQuiet. They were okay; less expensive than the Ford, but not much different. If you are limiting yourself to those two, then the ThermoQuiet.

On the second set of Wagner SevereDuty Brake Pads. I like them because they don't fade like the Ford or ThermoQuiet. They do need a couple of seconds or warm-up, though.

Gavin,

I bought the Wagner Thermo-Quiet pads on my 2001 Sport Trac. The pads worked fine and showed a slight improvement in stopping power over the OEM. They also came with cushioned isolator pads to prevent squealing which seemed to work great.

I paid about $70 for a set of pads, but that was back in 2003....not sure what they go for now?

I ONLY use Wagner thermoquiets.....

ALSO buy on line at an advance auto if you have one and use TRT online code save 30% or TRT41 for 40% off !!

Hard to fault the Wagner TQ pads. Very popular with great pricing and reviews.

You wouldn't believe the no-name front brake pads and rotors I found on eBay. They cost $100 for a set of front pads and two rotors. They now have 40,000 miles on them. The pads have 40% left and the rotors are doing their job just fine.

I'm just gathering recommendations. The discs are a bit warped on the 'Trac, and if I get in there and find some wear, due to frozen calipers, etc., I will replace the pads, so I am wondering what folks are using. Most of the independent shops around here use ThermoQuiets and swear by them. Wife had some put on her Honda Pilot last summer, and I cannot find any fault with them. However, I don't have any issues with the OEM pads on my 'Trac either.

Motorcyclists pretty much use EBC as the standard for quality and performance brake pads for their bikes. It is pretty much recognized around here that bikes should all have EBC pads on them. Sintered is preferred, but the organic are fine for standard duty and assured quietness.

I would recommend ceramic over sintered because the the ceramic has much less powder deposited on the wheels. And for the normal driver, the supposed better braking power of the sintered is not noticeable.

I'll stir the pot: Akebono.

If your stirring then I'll add some seasoning and 2nd the Akebonos. A lot of people are turned off because of the price but Akebonos are my go to brake pad.

STAY AWAY from the EBAY JUNK !!!! I installed several sets of that CRAP and the trucks stop worse !!!!!

As for the akebono I will say GREAT stopping pad !!!

The ONLY issue i found was fitment on the sport Trac. I ALWAYS had to grind the paint coating off the pad in a few spots for it to fit properly in the truck. They are a tight fit. Real tight....

But thats just my experiance..

I've had this issue from time to time with various brands of pads. A light file makes quick work of it though.

Im very pleased with my performance friction pads. They do throw some dust. I dont mind though. The hotter they get the better they grab. I have locked down on them @ 90mph. They were great and despite how hot they were. I tested them after and they still had great power. PF's are carbon mettalic. Most likley what yardsdale is using are simular.

If you dont mind the dust. Look for name brand pads that are carbon metalic.

No fancy rotors, using the oem's

Yep - "ceramic-enhanced metallic". They are great on mountain roads. Once they are warm, they are grab and don't fade.
