When my kids get old enough to drive, I plan on installing the GPS linked type of this box to their cars so I can tell exactly where they were/are, as well as the other stats. It's not a control thing, more of a safety thing.

It is a part of the engine management system so it can't be bypassed.

An example of uses for this info - A product liability case, in which I was hired to preserve a wrecked vehicle as evidence, alleged that the airbags in a new Satrun deployed spontaneously causing the dirver to hit the guardrail on an interstate exit. The driver was a freshman in college and her parents had purchased the car for her to drive to school. Before leaving for school, the airbag light was lit, so she took it to the dealer. A few days later, the accident occured and she alleged that the faulty airbags caused the accident. Black box analysis proved that the guardrail impact came first, then the airbag deployed.

Another case involved the death of a local businessman due to a high speed collision in the ZR1 he had purchased a few hours before the accident. The estate alleged the throttle was stuck open. I got big laughs from the GM engineers when I suggested that it was stuck open because of the size 11 Nike that was hung in it. The black box was inconclusive. The sad part was having to shred the vehicle with the ZR1 engine intact.

Regarding the the invasion of privacy, expectation of privacy is the key. You have no expectation of privacy when driving your car if the activites observed electronically are also observable by a bystander. That would be the same bystander who could see the pot or weapons in "plain view" that the cops can bust you for without also violating your rights. In the Saturn case, an observer might be able to see the collision cause the airbas deployment.

I do agree that Big Brother sees too much. I also understand that is is inevitable and I have to learn to live with it. Anybody who surfs the internet, owns credit cards, Social Security card, pays taxes, etc etc. has to know that there is no way to hide.
