So they had been saying that there was not enough room in the ST engine compartment, so the build a new ST and we got the V8 we always wanted.

All I can say is, this one would have fit.

well 23ballistic is dropping in that 302 isnt he... he'll prove all the naysayer wrongs.... with extensive modification of course

Several have talked about dropping a 5.0L in a ST, but nobody has. I've seen a 5.0L in a Explorer, really looks no more cramped than the 4.0L V6 does.

2001 was the last year for the 5.0L FoMoCo went with the 4.6 on the 02 Explorer. It was much simpler to keep pulling out of the Ford parts bin and get the V6. I bought my 'Trac back in 01, Ford had just released the sport trac, and they had no idea it was going to be a smash hit. Retooling for a V8 would have been prohibitive on the price, especially at the time. the HP of the v6 is 205 and the HP of the V8 is 225, not much of a difference back then. The average person would have went with the v6. We Sport trac nuts:wub: would have gone with the V8 and we would been a minority. Ford sells more Mustangs with the V6 than with the V8. Something to ponder.

Y'all have a good one

I would have gotten the V8. I would then consider a 2002 Trac with a V8 (and a rear wheel disk brake conversion) the most perfect Trac ever.

I too would have opted for the 5.0L V8 when I bought my 2001 if it were available. The gas mileage surely would have been no worse than what I got from the 4.0L V6.

A 5.0 V8 from a Explorer would have been no problem for Ford to put into the Sport Trac if they wanted to. The frames and mechanicals are virtually identical from the Front bumper to the back of the Sport Trac's Cab. All they would of had to do was drop in the V8 drivetrain from the Explorer and used a different GEM and ECC. The only reason that they didn't do it was because they planned on killing off the 5.0 after 2001 because of the new body Explorers that came in 2002.

I own a Trac and a V8 explorer and I have had the engine out of the Explorer. If one were to have a wrecked V8 Explorer to use as a donor, I dare to say that a V8 swap could almost be a bolt in deal with the exception of the wiring for the transfer case and lengthening the rear driveshaft. This is in my plans for my Trac hopefully next year. I drove a 5.0 too long in my 98 to ever get completely used to the 4.0 in the Trac.

I wonder what that little jewel sounds like when running? Typical V8 burble but on a higher pitch?

Here is a direct link to the video of it running.

That would be a sweet engine for a project of a mini street rod for a kid.

Why not? It's spinning a crankshaft, just like a full-size motor. Direct-drive it to some wheels, add a few servos and remote transmitters and you're golden.

Someone once made a 1/8? maybe 1/4 scale fully working Ferrari. Forget the model, but an older race car. You needed a cut key to turn it on even. It had working seatbelts, working throttle, brakes, clutches, transmission, everything......if there was someone small enough to drive it, it could be driven. Took many years to build, be a cool toy though.
