Sorry to hear of your bad times. I got lucky. Was able to retire about the time the market fell out, 2005.

Move to Texas. the job market is really opening up. Oil industry is hiring thousands right now,and thousands more to come. more to come. May have to live in a small town. For some of these new openings. Big market opening in the shale oil work. Many more support jobs comming open related to that.

Not to say we dont have unemployed. More white collar unenployed than blue. Texas is very industrial. Maybe not the lowest unemployed but one of the lowest.

I live in the gulfcoast Houston area. Very industrialized. Name it we most likly have it. If you are willing to get dirty and use your hands. Change your idea of what you would rather do. Non of my freinds and family were out of work more than 4months. Alot of support jobs related to industrial plant work. We have alot of major industrial support companies moving to texas.

Odd thing is some got offers. For better paying jobs in areas of no experiance. Shortly after going to work in areas they had experiance. The employer evidently liked their resume and was willing to train them.

Texas is a right to work state. Not required to join a union to work. Even if it is a union job. You dont recieve the hastling threats. As you do from the non right to work states. Not to say you wont have an individual call you names. You dont see the unions themselves come down on non members. With Wildcat strikes, etc. You will be replaced.

Unions here are somewhat different. They dont have a choke hold on the corporations. Despite the size of our corporate world. Most union jobs here pay 5/8 to 2/3. Of wages and benifits to there counterparts. In jobs where unions are dominate the work force. States were you join the union or you dont work.

Sorry about the union tanjent. I worked in a union plant 36yrs. At retirement my hourly wage was $24hr and split the cost of some benifits. I know my counterparts same type of work in non right to work states. Made as much as $45 to $50hr for the same work.

Anyway just some info for those thinking and wondering about working in Texas.

Dont get me wrong. Im not making garantees or promises. Just saying, their is work in Texas. You just have to be willing to follow where it leads you. We do have an influx of people moving here. Because of the job market.

Good luck with where ever your endeavor leads you. My prayers are with you.

rod,

I am sorry to hear about your job troubles, but it is troubling times and jobs are scarce in most areas...but a lot depends upon you line of work.

If you don't mind relocating to the Wilston, ND area, there are more jobs there than they could ever fill. It all has to do with the big shale oil operation in the the local Baaken Shale Oil Fields. I have heard reports that they are hiring not only oil field workers but all the support people to build the infastructure to support all the oil workers...I have heard that McDonald's is paying $50K a year to just flip hamburgers !! Of course that also means that the cost of living is high there, and it probably is, but if you get in early you get in cheap before the costs continue upward.

It may be good to get a job there to ride out this economic slump. When things get better you could look for other work in your chosen career field...Or you may just want to stay put in North Dakota?

My son-in-law just started working for a shale oil drilling operation in Ohio a few weeks ago since they found a large shale oil deposit there too.

...Rich

I don't have any clear answers or advice for you. I know a lot of people are really hurting right now, and many like you are really busting their chops trying to get some traction, with little success. I am sorry you are one of them. I thank God every day that I am so far doing OK.

I will pray for you. I will continue praying for our country.
