I need to download a file but there are 32-bit and 64-bit versions for WinXP and all of a sudden I'm clueless. I have Windows Home XP (full version) which I've been using shortly since it was released, but I don't have the box while the documentation and CD case don't give me any clues. How do I find out through WinXP itself, what version I have?

I'm ashamed to ask since I was such a PC geek just a few years ago, but ever since I got the Trac...I've become less of a geek, just a little...

For now, I think it's safe to just use the 32-bit one. I'd still like to find out though. Thanks!

If you have been using XP that long it's going to be 32bit.

Open the 'Control Panel'.

Open the 'System' applet. Does it say "64bit" anywhere in the 'System' section of the 'General' tab?

Home edition, 32 bit.

Heh, didn't even noticed that he mentioned it is a Home edition. Good catch.

64 bit is used for the newer 64 bit pipeline processors

so if you have a older system you need the 32-bit driver

also there has been so many problems with the 64 bit drivers

that a lot of people continue using the 32-bit driver anyway

they are not getting top performance from their processors

but at least the system is stable

Just bought a new system for the house. AMD Athlon 64 - 4800+ 2.4GHz (939) Dual Core with 1gig ram. It's damn quick. This is the 3rd system I have purchased from a local computer store that builds their own systems.

Interesting, HP 5400 printer works fine with every app when printed, except for printing pages on the web. I had to load the drivers three times to get it this far. I wonder if it has anything to do with 64 bit?
