I just got DSL at home and they gave me a wireless modem/router for the system. (it has 4 wired ports too). This replaces my Linksys router I was using, so now,,,, how can I keep others from "driving" by and using MY signal? There is no paperwork on the modem/router. I have no clue. I know how to set up a firewall on the pc but the extra signal is what concerns me. Is this making sense?

You should be able to log into the router, IP usually 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 and disable the wireless function...if you no plans on using the wireless connection.

If you want to use the wireless function, you can set your securities.

You need to set up a unique non-broadcasted SSID and enable WPA dynamic key encryption if that router has it. If not, go with WEP encryption.

It's a Netopia 2247NWG-VGx. I found the website, but any help from you guys to make me understand it will be great.

This is the first time I have heard of an internet service just dumping a wireless system in a house without configuring it. Is this common? Agood portion of everyday users would never know to secure their networks.

Basically you need to configure the router from one of the hard wired computers already connected to it. Open an internet browser and type in http://192.168.1.254 in the address. This will bring up the routers internal configuration screen. Login with the username admin and the router's serial number for the password.

You didn't say if you wanted wireless or not so these directions are how to disable it. With it disabled there is no other encryption changes necessary. You should now be in "expert mode". Click configure, LAN, wireless (in the other LAN options box). If the enable wireless check box is checked make sure to uncheck it to turn if off. It it is already unchecked leave it alone, wireless is already disabled. Click Submit and you are done.

From what I was reading, the router should ship with wireless turned off but better off checking yourself to be safe. If you need more help or want wireless enabled with encryption post again.

Here is where it is set from factory:

Should I leave alone or what?

EDIT: Just found and turned off the wireless part. Now it's just cat5 cables

DEFAULT: >>>> ClearSailing Removes the traffic restrictions imposed by SilentRunning and LANdlocked. Protection against unwanted inbound traffic is controlled by NAT settings.

Note: The ClearSailing firewall setting is necessary to enable pinholes, IPMaps and a NAT default server.

SilentRunning Using this level of firewall protection allows secure transmission of outbound traffic, but disables any attempt for inbound traffic to identify the Gateway. This is the Internet equivalent of having an unlisted number.

Note: The SilentRunning firewall setting disables pinholes, IPMaps and a NAT default server.

LANdLocked This option turns off all inbound and outbound traffic (including pinholes and IPMaps), isolating the LAN and disabling all WAN traffic.

Definitelty want to turn off LANdLocked otherwise you will not be able to access the internet. I am not familiar with SilentRunning but keep it on and see if you have any problems with websites or programs. If you get errors or are blocked (ex. p2p programs) turn if off. It is better to have more protection so start this way.
