I put in a new motor. It wasn't much more than getting a rebuild done and with over 300K on it, it made sense for me...

Still have my '01. 332K miles. New engine at 315 and rebuilt tranny at 297. Not my daily driver anymore, but still does everything I ask of her...

Made it to 315K before the original engine went out...

Could the butterfly valve in the throttle body be getting momentarily stuck? Do you have the same problem with the stumble when you apply the gas slowly?

On my 88 TBird that is what happened. The brake switch went out, the brake lights would not work. Also, the cruise control would not switch off when the brake pedal was pressed (that's how I noticed the problem). I had to use the off button to disengage it. It took about 10 minutes to change...

Try spraying lube into the latching mechanism. That worked for me.

Check car-part.com also. It may save you some time looking.
