It basically is a RWD until you rear tires slip, then through a viscous clutch in the transfer case the front wheels are enguaged....

It is a nice system to drive off road, but takes some getting used to....

And on road, you dont get the steering issues and lower MPG that you would normally get with a full time 4wd...

From talking to the Ford guys at the show, the control trac system on the 07 sounds similar to what I had on my 95 Explorer (also called control trac). There will be an auto setting (95% to the rear wheels unless they slip), 4wd HI, and 4wd Low, both of which lock the transfer case for a 50-50 front-rear split.
