My suggestions on grilling the perfect steak:



1) Use charcoal if you can and light them and let them turn to gray, but if you must use gas then make sure to preheat the grill very well, then back the heat back off to about "3/4 throttle" (on my grill, that's about 450 degs)



2) Put the steaks on the grill, grill ONE side completely before turning, then turn the other side. For me, it's about 5 minutes on the first side for rare, 7 for Med-Rare, 10 minutes for well done....then after flipping time the second side for 1/2 that time (approx 3, 4 and 5 minutes, respectively.



3) Pull the steaks off the grill, let stand for 2 minutes before serving.



That's it... hot, but not too hot grill, one flip per side, less time on the "back side", and let them stand.



Oh, and one last thing...use TONGS, never use a fork for flipping (seals in the juices better), and vary the cook time by thickness.



Lastly, lookup (google) the whole "palm" technique for determining doneness. Differnent areas on the palm of your hand correspond with different "firmnesses" of steak doneness. Pressing those areas of your palm will feel the same way a thicker steak feels when done to the same degree.

Oddly enough, I have the same answer as JerryA. My dad taught me to grill, and he likes his steaks just short of charcoal. I've been universally told that this is not a good way to cook steaks, so I'm still learning how to do it right while unlearning how to do it wrong.



The rest are no big deal.
 
Yea, thats pretty much what I do. Got gas, but didn't heat up then turn down. Will try that. Usually just heat up and slap on.



Found a great spice for the steaks too, Safeways ultimate steak and chicken rub. Great stuff, free at the butchers counter. Don't know whats in it, but it really jumps alot of flavor to the steak, without overpowering the meat.

The only part I disagree with TJR about is only flipping once.. a perfecting cooked steak will have grill marks in a cross hatch pattern of 45 degrees. So that requires cooking each side twice. Other than that spot on :cool:

I know how to cook a mean steak, bascially without ever having anyone have to tell me how to do it.



I use a very similar method to that which TJR outlined, but I absolutely love a bit of BBQ sauce cooked into the flavour of the meat.

And JD, you don't have to cook that second time really, just leave it on long enough to get that pattern like I do.
 
I've read the steaks will turn out juicier if only flipped once. That's how I've been cooking my steaks for the last 3-4 years and my steaks are much better tasting.



As far as spices/marinades, I used to love Montreal Steak Seasoning (now I just use that on cheaper cuts like sirloins). My favorite steak by far to grill is a boneless Ribeye....Ahhh my mouth is watering. I usually season it with olive oil and some various spices off the spice rack (seasoned salt and pepper, garlic, dry mustard etc...whatever sounds good). If anyone lives near a Cub Foods with their new Butcher shop, you have to try the Authentic Steak-House marinade. hands down their best marinade for steak.



 
On a side note, why do you have to know the breast-stroke? If I'm in a life or death situation, I'm going to swim the normal method (freestyle I think).
 
OK, I'm not male, but I aced that list too. Also with the exception of the perfect steak. I've done it at least twice, but consistency is what I need to work on. Now, ribs or a brisket those are perfect every time. (knock on wood)



I guess for me there would also be a partial exception to the map/GPS item. I can read a map and I can use a GPS, however if you put me in a new place when the sun is in the middle of the sky, the chances of me telling you which way is north are slim to none. However, if I have a map or GPS do I really need to be able to do that?



On the other hand, I have an amazing hubby who can do all of these and more so why should I even bother. :banana:
 
Kimbros, from Kingman! Drove past ya about 20 years back heading from Flag to Yucca. didn't know anyone still lived there!:p



And ribs are always perfect when I cook. I slow cook them in the oven for several hours, then BAM, on a freakin hot grill for about 2 mins each side to sear in the seasoning. Sweet!
 
I can cook the perfect steak in a oven. I can't swim. gps is not manly, give me a compass. It has been 19 years since I have drove a stick.

If you like the criss-cross marks then rotate the steaks 90 degress during the 1/2 way point of cooking each side...that way you still only have them cooked on one side per flip. :eek:

I remember seeing this list on another site. On that site, they asked for nominations for what others should be added. The top two vote getters:



15. Open a bra from the front.

16. Open a bra from the back.



One other comment that was particularly popular was regarding #8--Swim the Breaststroke. The comment was that it shouldn't be on the list, as real men swim freestyle.
 
Real men don't need GPS! That's like stopping and asking for directions, something a real man would NEVER do.
 
GPS is for pansies. Having a real time map to see side roads is nifty, but if you have GPS turn-by-turn navigation, that's sad.



Personally, if yo' GPS tells you more than Lat & Long and a compass, it's pansified.



To quote my street atlases:
