The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization, issued a press release late Monday:

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

I'm in no way, shape, or form a supporter of Al Gore, but until you start comparing the energy costs per square foot it's not a fair comparison. It makes for good rhetoric though.

Think of it this way... if his house is 20x the size of the avg home, doesn't it make sense to use 20x as much energy? You can't penalize someone for being successful enough to afford that size of a house by expecting them to live in a smaller house just so their usage is in line with the avg. And, yes, I feel that way even if he is supposed to be a spokeman for cutting back on usage. What if he actually is doing everything he can to lower his usage? Isn't that still walking the walk and talking the talk?

Doug,

You only take that stand if you support that person. If you don't support that person, than you leave out the facts.

Tom

p.s. I think Al Gore is an idiot just behind the biggest idiot in history.

Well, that's exactly what the Leftys want to do with YOUR salary, YOUR house, and YOUR Sport Trac.

Different set of rules for the leaders though, sorta like the old Soviet Union.

If Al thinks my truck is too big and wasteful (he does), then I think his house is too big and wasteful. No one NEEDS a house that big. I understand the security issue, but a nice condo in a secure building would be fine. I bet I have more flourescent light bulbs in my little house than Al Gore has in his mansion.

Caymen, I'm not sure if you're saying that I, personally, support Gore or the article would by including facts, but trust me, I meant what I said. I DO NOT support Al Gore. I do, however, support his right (not him personally), and everyone else's, to own a house that big if he so chooses.

I'm just trying to look at the article objectively by using a logical (to me) comparison (ratios)vs. total costs without regard to size. I do feel that he is being hypocritical, as usual, by calling for lower energy usage and turning around and using as much as he does.

p.s. I think he's an idiot too, but I think he's tied with the other one instead of behind him.

JohnnyO, I agree with you that the "lefty's" love spending my (our) money and I disagree with most of the ways they want to do it.

I think that is a personal choice. Just because it might be fine for yourself, doesn't mean it would be for him. I would NEVER live in a condo. But, again, that's my choice.

I was making refrence to the fact that so many people will only look at facts to support their feelings, but when it goes against what they believe, they only read what supports it and will dismiss what doesn't as moot information.

I was not pointing a finger at you.

I am sorry, I put Gore right behind the other idiot. I don't think there there is enough room on this planet for two people as big of an idiot as the one in the White House is.

Tom

Don't you get it.

Al Gore wants YOU to use mass transportaion while he flies around in a private jet (emitting more CO2 in 1 flight than your ST emits in a year).

He wants YOU to conserve electric at home while he heats and lights a 20 room mansion (using more power in a month that you do in a year).

He wants YOU to drive an econo box while he is chauffered around in a strech limo or an armoured SUV from enviornmental event to event.

That is the hypocrisy of the situation. No one is begrudging him the perks of his position in life but don't preach to me to conserve when he obviously does not.

Give the guy a break. If he hadn't invented the internet all you Gore bashers would not even be here.

I stand behind his freedom of choice. There is a such a thing as walking the talk. If you dont you are a Hypocrite, that is a fact...

Tom, And here I thought you meant the knucklehead he used to work for. That's who I think he's tied with. I have to disagree with you now that you were referring to my CINC. Not just for that reason, but because I agree with most of what he does/has done.

Let's not forget that as a former Vice President, Al Gore and his family get Secret Service protection for life. And their vehicle of choice is the big, evil, gas-guzzling, polar ice cap melting Chevy Suburban that Gore claims is at the root of global warming. Has his Secret Service team gone "green"? I doubt it.

Think about how much of the ozone they're allegedly burning with all of the resources they consume in protecting him and his family.

Doug,

Now you've done it. You done gone and disagreed with Caymen. This could get ugly.

The day when Al, Hillary, Obama, etc. pack into a Prius along with their security detail is the day they have the cred to tell me what to drive.

What are they going to do when GM quits making Suburbans? That day is coming, by their own doing. Pimp out a military Hummer I guess. Not much room inside those either.

I still don't get why all the righties keep saying that Al claimed that he invented the internet. He never said any such thing.

BillV, I guess when Al says something like:

During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.

Us crazy righties interpret that as him trying to take credit for creating the Internet. He took the initiative in creating it. In other words, if he didn't, no one would have created it. Sounds like invention to me.

He might have meant something different, but that's NOT what he said.
