What does surprise us: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice’s timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, “How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!” Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.

It doesn't seem like it's anyones business but hers as to what she does or buys on her time.

definitely her right to buy what she wants, but I'd think I'd show some restraint during a crisis like this. You'd think she'd send her secretary out to pickup the shoes for her, so as to not draw undue attention.

Hal - You are missing the point. She was spending a large sum of money on shoes. That means she is rich and therefore evil. It doesn't matter that the "fellow shopper" was in there either. If she is a "fellow shopper" I guess she is evil as well. It has to be our business because the rich obviously didn't earn their money; they got it by cheating it out of poor working stiffs like us.

In the same article, they talked about Condi "laughing it up" at Spam-a-Lot, the musical. I have to admit that I am a little guilty of this myself. From now until everyone in Louisiana is happy I will dress in black and never smile.

What a crock of stuff

It is nobodys bussiness what I do with my money or time. The same goes for Condi's life or your next door nieghbor. As long as it is not criminal.....

Some people need to get a life. Think about that next time you buy a mod or trinket for your Trac. SHEEEEESSSHHHH...........

Who cares what Condi Rice does? What the hell is she going to do for the people in New Orleans? People need to mind their own damn business.

Darin,

While not such a bad idea in the yrs past, having her sec go pick up the shoes would be wrong in todays world.

It is not the sec's job to run personal erins for his boss.

Now, with the kind of money the lady makes, she could have had a personal shopper go pick them up.

I just have to wonder;

Would you all be so forgiving it was Hillary Clinton in exactly the same situation doing (and having done) exactly the same things?

We had better all stop buying gas for our guzzling STs. My God, how can we afford such luxury when people are still at the dome complaining their welfare and stamps have not arrived?

grump

grump,

A true cynic right to the end!

I'm proud of you!

We need to keep that attitude alive and well or we're all in deep do-do.

I just wonder what is this woman doing at a Broadway show in the middle of a national emergency?

This is akin to going to a Broadway show in the middle of September 11.

Wouldn't you expect the Secretary of State to work past 5pm on a day an entire American city is being wiped off the face of the planet?

Wasn't there a thread not long ago about the elected leaders not having an 8 to 5 work day?

I just wonder...

You're right Rocco, I am somewhat of a cynic. I think a lot of us are at times. I try not to always be that way but sometimes, based on stories and pics, it's hard not to be. Unfortunately, what I put above is happening. I was just reading an article (I don't believe all of what I read) about the post office suggesting folks give forwarding addresses. I'll leave it at that.

I may be way off here, but I seem to remember Miss Rice is from the South and grew up very poor. Without debating what she should or should not be doing during an emergency such as this, I believe she has the right to spend her money on whatever she desires. Political affiliations aside, she's earned it.

grump:)

Grump,

I love my fellow cynics. Live long enough and we can become full-fledged curmudgeons!

:D

As for Rice - a little discretion would have been nice. But you are right - it's her money and she can spend it the way she wants.

I think that's the problem with the media in this country. They try to catch someone like a politician doing something that everybody does and tries to make something sinister out of it.

Rice did not steal the shoes, she did not loot the shoes, she paid for them with money she earned. She makes a nice salary and can afford the shoes, so why should she not buy the shoes if she likes them?

I'm sure there were many wealthy people in this country that purchased expensive shoes, cars, boats, champagne, caviar, etc. Are they required to shop at Wal-Mart or PayLess for their shoes!

It has nothing to do with timing or discretion, unless someone is looking to make it a class warfare issue. If it was not shoes, it would be whatever they deemed inappropriate, uncaring, or extravigant!

The problem we have in this country is that there are too many reporters and lawyer that have nothing to do to earn an honest living so they have to make an issue about something or someone they don't like.

...Rich

Rocco,

I think you know the answer to that one. Most of the people defending Condi in this thread would be all over Hillary for doing the same thing.

No- if it were Hillary-- same thing-no big deal!

No one knows if she has contributed, or is going to contribute to the victims. That's her business too. This type of "GOTCHA" cr@p makes me sick- no matter who is on the receiving end.
