Odd question: I recently got married, and I am in the process of changing everything over to my new married name. I know I have to change my drivers license and my registration, but what about my title? But here is the real question....Do I have a title? I am financing it from Ford Credit, and my husband told me that the title is just under their name. Does this make sense???

Your name is on the title. Ford Credit is listed as the lien holder. Call and get your name on your account changed as well.

I have financed a car before and the title was in my name but the finance company "holds" it. You get back the title when the debt is paid. Just their security blanket that they get their money should the car change hands. You most likely will have to get the name changed and get them an updated title. Check with your DMV.

In Ohio, the bank holds your title. Once you pay the vehicle off, they mail you the title with the statement on the title that says "lien satisfied".

Some banks, such as credit unions, will give you the title if you finance the vehicle against your shares. So, like our motorhome. Dad got the loan through the credit union. The money he borrowed to buy the coach was borrowed against the money, or shares, he has in the credit union. The bank already has his money, they don't need the title.

Emily,

My wife works at Ford Motor Credit here in Franklin, TN.

She just told me what you need to do:

You need to mail a copy of your marriage certificate (does not need to be certified)

along with a short letter informing them that you would like to have your maiden

or previous married name changed to your current married name.

The Address is:

Ford Motor Credit

9009 Carothers Parkway

Franklin, TN. 37068-0020

Also, be sure to include your account number in your request!

Hope this helps...
