Coastie,

I agree with what most folks said here about adding the wireless router to an open port on your wife's box. However, by doing so, if you do it incorrectly you may open a backdoor into your home network, which may expose your wife's computer to people passing nearby within wireless range.

If your wife's computer is used for government work, I suspect that configuration would NOT meet NSA standards. She needs to consult her network folks at work before you proceed. The government is very picky about wireless networks.

Nelson,

Nearly all wireless routers contain firewalls and the ability to encrypt data. Even the simples WEP encryption will eliminate any real threat of someone picking up your signal and being able to connect to your network. If you don't think that's enough security for a home network, most routers contain several higher levels of encryption that would probably challenge the CIA to get in.

Personally, in my neighbohood WEP encryption is probably as secure as I need or what most people would need for a home network.

OK, got it working perfectly.

I had a New in the Box Linksys Wireless router. With some of the info above I tried to do what many had suggested. Just would not work properly.

Opened an on-line chat with Linksys support and they walked me thru it. Went pretty smooth. What made it easy was having my laptop available to plug into the second router as a stand alone unit to set up the Router internal controls.

If anyone would like to see how it is do I'll write it up and post it as well as save it to my library for future use.

Nelson, your correct because of the level of security. I did contact them and were good to go as her Router has 2 firewalls before it and 2 after it. They set me up with 2 before and 2 after on mine once I was up and running. Did it all on-line. Made it nice.

Bottom line, all machines running well...

Thanks for the help all..

Coastie,

I'm glad you have everything working, and kept your wife's system safe. I've been a USAF Communications-Computer System Program Manager for 18 years, and we have to look at all potential problems before implementing a new comm system. While I lack the actual expertise to set up the varied systems (radars. weather equipment, airfield systems, telephone and computer networks, etc.), I usually can catch any potential problems. It's always better to play it safe.
