The Sumter City Police just called me to unlock the trunk on a Nissan Altima. The doors are open, the remote trunk lock will not work and they CAN fold down the back seat to get to the trunk. They were told to fold down the seat, and reach in and get the keys. This is what they said.......... "There is a dead man in the trunk and we can't go in through the back seat" DUH>>>> OK,, Call the fire dept and let them pry it open,,,,, I"M NOT TOUCHING IT!!! :cheeky::cheeky:

LaRue,

I can't blame you for passing up that job. I would not want my fingerprints anywhere near that car.

I wonder how long it would take you to get paid for that job even if you did take it.??

budfromballground: I have unlocked 2 houses for the city before ( bodies in a bedroom) , but not a car with a dead body in the trunk......... It's all over the local news... Maybe I should have,,,,,, for the free advertising....:supercool:

In my line of work, a dead body is just another thing to deal with. I wouldn't have gotten so "squishy" about unlocking the trunk. The only thing is, as soon as that lock clicked, I would have backed out to let the cops do their thing. It's no different than a tow truck driver called to roll a car over that has a dead guy under it or a backhoe operator called to dig up a shallow grave in someone's back yard. You just deal with it and move on.

Plus, La Rue, it would have been a way to get in good with the cops. They'd refer business to you.

Mark, good points, people call the cops all the time asking for lock-outs, they can just give them your card. Many cops will not do lockouts anymore because of liablility issues. But many do have slim jims and other stuff to get into cars...

ok I didn't want to at first but feel I need to chime in. Police departments don't want bad press,,.....ever, of any kind, so they are not not going to pay their bills. As for your business, it never hurts to have a police department as future frequent clients. Many departments don't "contract" but will have a "tow of the month" or "locksmith of the month" as to not be accused of showing favoritism especially in a town/area/city with several options but it can happen. Some police departments have been accused of things like the tow truck company happens to be owned by the brother of the captain. Again that can look bad and bad press. Yes I know it differs in some parts of the country since this forum is in the world wide web. BUT. I do suggest, if you take a job like that for a police department, law office, state, federal or what have you. Have someone there with you, not in law enforcment to be your witness. You may never know but you may be called into a hearing of some kind. They may even take your finger prints as to eliminate you when the crime lab goes over the car. Just CYA - Cover Your Ass. Good luck.

They still call me on occasion because Rose works at the magistrates office and may cops already send stuff my way. I just couldn't handle a dead body in a car. Houses, I never have to be that close, Just unlock the door and step back.....

LaRue, I understand the apprehension, but look at it this way--If you had taken the job, then in a couple days when they start investigating you for the crime, you have a really easy explanation for why your fingerprints were found at the scene. Now, since you had no legitimate reason to be touching the car, your fingerprints on it might cost you 15 to life. :bwahaha:

Mazz,

I never implied that the police department would never pay for LaRue's lock services, just that like most cities and towns today, they are hard pressed for cash and that does not speed up the wheels of buracracy and red tape..

Rich, Oh I understand what you were saying and I am not implying that is what you said. I am just saying the police department does not want bad press. It may take a while but they will pay as long as you cover your own bases. Hell, In Camden NJ they are laying off cops because of economy and budget, I am sure they own a few bills too.

Mazz,

No problem I understand where you were coming from.

Eddie,

I agree...about the dead bodies, the smell is far worse than the sight.
