I need a digital camera for action shots. My son runs track and plays football, and my current camera seems to blur action shots.I currently have a Fujifilm Finepix S3000 w/ 6times optical zoom . I need to find a camera that is easy to use, with good zoom. Thanks. Victor

Not a compact but very nice for action shots & optical zoom.

Link is Circuit City but may find it cheaper elsewhere. I got it for ~$310 @ CC awhile back.

Might want to check out the S1 & S2 also. Cheaper and real close in specs.

Just looked, Walmart has it for $319. $20 cheaper than CC after the $30 Gift cert they offer.

I have a Canon S3 IS. Can't go wrong if you're looking to zoom onto the freckles on his face (12x optically stabilized) as he dives for that first down (sports preset, and a manual mode where you can do the full shutter speed, aperture, etc. settings). :D

AdamCKach and Fred,

I just got the S3 IS last weekend, and it's been a joy so far. Great pics in all modes.

But I have one question for you two, and I've looked on a bunch of different camera sites

for the answer. On mine, the arrow button on the upper right, back of the camera, when

toggled, or pushed, seems to have a small "detent" feel on all sides (up, down, left)

except when pushing it to the right position, then it feels kind of "mushy" for lack of

a better technical term. It works fine, it just seems "spongy" pushing it to the right.

Have either of you two noticed this, or is it just a quirk of my particular camera?

Thanks, and sorry for the hijack victorv. It's still a great camera, and I'm a little O.C.D.

like that sometimes, anyway!

TnB,

All four 'buttons' on mine have the same detent/cushioned click feel. I've only had it for 1 month though.

You could go with the Nikon D50. A nice entry level SLR. I have the D70 and it is great at the race track and for other action shots.

My previous Canon Powershot G5 worked great as well, though the processor and write speed was slow.

Sony DSC-H5 12x optical, good image stabilization, 3" super sharp LCD

[Broken External Image]:

You can buy a tele-converter for under $100 that takes the optics to 20.4x with no loss of picture quality!

Dave, Adam, Fred, and Tracknblack,

I've been looking to replace my old sony cybershot and the S3 IS is the one I've been looking at mainly. I read some reviews about purple fringing on the edges of pics it takes. Have you guys noticed this at all? could just be a couple of people that don't know how to set their camera setting properly.

thanks

My son just bought a Nikon D80. It is a little pricey but it is truely awesome. It can take 3 frames/sec of action photos and teh picture is great.

Olympus SP-550 UZ: 18x ultra zoom

This camera just came out this month. Around $499.00

I just bought the Nikon D40 and it is truly awesome!! Not as pricey as the D80 and great for those looking for something better than a point and shoot. The colors in the pictures are just amazing. I wanted a camera that would take great shots at my sons high school baseball games along with just vacation and family pictures. It was more than I wanted to spend, but now I think it was well worth it and am really glad I put the extra money into it. The camera with a kit lens is $549 and I bought a telephoto for $200. It is really a great set up and I highly recomed it.

You can go to dpreview.com for reviews on all sorts of different cameras. They also have a forum where you can ask any questions you have and someone there will answer them for you.

jlevin75,

I haven't noticed any purple fringing, but I'm not a photo expert by any stretch. I put 3 recent pics in my library in the folder named "Cruise".

The Margaritaville picture was taken from the ship, so it was zoomed a lot.

I haven't noticed any, either. I will upload some shots into the folder below in about 20 minutes.

As for...

Woah! Looks like the Canon S4 IS (or whatever they do to it then) has some tough, tough competition. Me likey.

Note: The photos at the link below are taken: (1) full zoom with *no* polarizing filter, and (2) at no zoom with the polarizer. At full zoom, an object that far away naturally loses clarity. The lighting of the day necessitated a polarizer, which the second photo shows the effect of one. In photo 2, the houses are waaaaay out there on the mountain. And, for those who are curious, these were taken looking opposite and off of the world famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA. :)

Good luck with your decision.

Fred and Adam,

thanks for the info and the pics! After looking at them I'm confident the people with the purple fringing problems were doing something wrong. I know I've made my decision!
