Anybody have any experience with the Escort Passport 8500 with the red letters? Ive had it for about 5 years and up until a couple months ago it has started going haywire. If i accelerate fast it gives me the "laser" warning and wont go off until i unplug it. Also it will be scanning and then all the sudden stop scanning and go dead. It is just overall gone haywire. Is there software on the internet for it or a forum website I can go to. Just wondering if other people have had this problem with the same radar detector.

I have found that with every radar detector that I have owned, that leaving it in the truck all the time is not good. It seems that the heat hear in Florida kills them being closed up after a few years, and they act up sometimes like you are talking about. I see you live in GA - you may have the same issue.

Kyle, call Escort in Ohio @1-800-433-3487 and give them the serial number (if you bought it thru Escort) and they will tell you if it can be fixed, upgraded, what it will cost (about $30), etc. They may offer you a trade-in deal to upgrade. I had that model for about 6-7 years without any problems. I traded up to the battery operated Solo S2 last year when I got the Sport Trac as the Trac only has an outlet in the center console and that meant the cord was stretched and in my way. I think John might be right, I never leave it in the truck when I'm not in it. Good luck, Bob ;)

Ditto what Bob said on calling Escort. I had a problem with my S2 last year after owning it for 2 years. They had me send it to them and they rebuilt it. Has been working great ever since...

to answer Josh: I live in Marietta over in the west cobb area on John Ward Road by the marietta square.

I will try calling escort also but would they really give me a replacement or anything after 5 years?

and yesterday i learned you can reset it so i did that and restored it back to default and i havent been able to drive around yet so I will see if that by any chance solves the problem once I drive down the road a little bit.

I have two Cobra Radar/Laser detectors since 1997 and they are rarely ever removed from the windshield of my vehicles and I live in Texas where the heat is extreamly intense during the summer They performed flawlessly and still do.

So I don't think that the heat should effect them since they are designed to be mounted in the vehicle where they will be exposed to the direct heat of the sun. I suspect that they just died because the warranty had expired..:(:(

Sold my detectors as they have become useless in Kali with the switchover to Lidar.

Just a heads up, if in the market buy an external mount detector I:E one that mounts in the grill area.

If the federal mandate is passed to have heat reflective glass in all autos by 2012.

No interior mounted detectors will work.

I have a Valentine One that picks up Lidar, but if it does, all it's good for is to let you know to pull over sooner and get out your license and registration.
