BTW: You don't have to have regular vehicle inspections to get in trouble with the law over vehicle mods. Just ask folks with really dark tint or burned out taillights, etc.

That's true, Gavin, but without inspections, I'm at least able to get a tag and drive without a premptive banishment from the State.

They came on 86 and up cars as an option but :



A vehicle's 3rd brake light is mandatory by law in most states on 1992 and later vehicle year models.

Some state default all lighting and vehicle safety equipment to be DOT approved for that year and model. Some other states are much more liberal ordinances regarding vehicle lighting.



It appears that the northeastern states are more strict in applying their vehicle lighting laws.
